Helliar to host The Trophy Room

Peter Helliar has been announced as host of the ABC's new sports quiz show The Trophy Room.

Peter Helliar has been announced as host of the ABC’s new sports quiz show The Trophy Room.

The former host of The Bounce, and regular Rove and Before the Game star, said he initially wasn’t sure if he wanted the role, but was soon convinced at the auditions.

“I had a chat with the producers and we played some of the games, and I walked away … knowing that I wanted to be involved with this show.”

The fomat will hope to do for sports what Spicks and Specks has done for music. It sees two teams of three will combine sports chat and trivia with parlour games and physical sporting challenges in a fiercely contested and fun-filled half-hour.

ABC is yet to announce team captains.

Helliar told the Sunday Herald Sun he had moved on from The Bounce.

“It was disappointing because we truly believed we had the support (of Seven),” he said.

“But the other reality is that there wasn’t the kind of traction we needed.”

To be produced in Sydney, The Trophy Room premieres 8:30pm Wednesday, 8 December on ABC1.

  1. Watched the first episode of this and couldn’t believe how bad it was. Helliar is very average, but I found the ABC sports news reader Amanda Shalala to be bloody awful and just wouldn’t shut up. Plus she really showed how little she knew about sport when there was a question about which team in the AFL has the longest period since last winning a premiership. Shalala started yelling out teams like the Sydney Swans (who won a premiership in the last 5 years) and a few others that had also won in the last 30 years. I’m not even a big AFL follower and it pi**ed me off big time to hear a ‘sports reporter’ yell out such stupid answers.

Not only is this show a drop in standards for the ABC, but it also shows that they’re not giving a crap about their reporters having any knowledge in their supposed field of expertise. Pathetic.

I’m also sick of ‘quiz’ shows that only ask about 10 questions in an entire show – it just moves to slowly like Spicks & Specks. Boring.

  2. @Chandler The vast majority of comments are negative to the point of abuse: “unfunny idiot”, ” how is this man still on television?”, “Better keep attending auditions Helliar”, “mediocre talent on the air again”, “this bloke will never be funny”, “When will producers wake up to the fact that the Australian public have spoken a number of times and have said loud and clear that Helliar does nothing for them”, “Peter Helliar is not funny and I just don’t understand how he continues to get jobs like this”.

It’s not just that people don’t like Peter Helliar, it’s as if people have to kick him while he’s knocked down by their first attack.

  3. So whose successful TV show go axed for Peter Helliar to get this new job?

Probably something that rated rather well and had a good following!

Austereo wasn’t the force behind this change where they?
