Helliar to host The Trophy Room

Peter Helliar has been announced as host of the ABC's new sports quiz show The Trophy Room.

Peter Helliar has been announced as host of the ABC’s new sports quiz show The Trophy Room.

The former host of The Bounce, and regular Rove and Before the Game star, said he initially wasn’t sure if he wanted the role, but was soon convinced at the auditions.

“I had a chat with the producers and we played some of the games, and I walked away … knowing that I wanted to be involved with this show.”

The fomat will hope to do for sports what Spicks and Specks has done for music. It sees two teams of three will combine sports chat and trivia with parlour games and physical sporting challenges in a fiercely contested and fun-filled half-hour.

ABC is yet to announce team captains.

Helliar told the Sunday Herald Sun he had moved on from The Bounce.

“It was disappointing because we truly believed we had the support (of Seven),” he said.

“But the other reality is that there wasn’t the kind of traction we needed.”

To be produced in Sydney, The Trophy Room premieres 8:30pm Wednesday, 8 December on ABC1.

  1. Maybe Peter Helier should just do stand up comedy and thats it. Lets face it a personalitys life on tv is always on borrowed time eventually their shows will start to fail and in this day and age the underperforming shows will get the axe. Maybe thats why Rove decided to get out while he still had some diginity left, unfortunelty Peter doesnt know when to quit. Just do stand up and thats it.

  2. @Sydney2K. the show might actually be good. but the host is a try hard comedian. his joke aren’t and never were funny. i would have went went with adam hills

  3. LMAO,
The other day i was taling to some friends saying how much we dislike the guy & yet he keeps getting jobs & his tv ads are even annoying like his 111Hits ads

  4. I don’t know much about Peter Helliar to pass judgment on him, but he can’t possibly be worse than Spicks & Specks host, Adam Hills! Hills makes people like Rove look good. Yet, the ratings for S&S are still pretty healthy, despite the fact that show is way past its used-by-date.

Who knows? The Squiz #2 might actually work this time?

Vicky, so Channel Ten is at the top of the ratings heap, are they? Even when the ABC (not “the abc”) occasionally beat them for third place?

  5. I’m in agreement with everyone else, very poor choice for a host. Peter Helliar is not funny and I just don’t understand how he continues to get jobs like this. Too bad, I would have watched this with someone else hosting.

  6. Is this an AFL show? Making Peter Helliar the host certainly gives that impression.

    Sydney has already tuned out.

I like Peter Helliar, but he should be a team captain, not the host.

  7. When will producers wake up to the fact that the Australian public have spoken a number of times and have said loud and clear that Helliar does nothing for them. It’s a good thing ABC don’t care about ratings as this choice as host, I suspect, guarantees they won’t get them.

  8. Bad call. Probably would have watched this, but won’t now. Hellier is not a good host at all, surely The Bounce proved that. He was good as a member on Before The Game and playing Strauchnie. But he can’t host. Won’t be watching. Same reason I decided not to watch Iron Chef, because they chose Grant Denyer. But i’ll watch Amazing Race with Grant Bowler. Right host choice can make or break a show.

  9. Terrible choice for a host, he is not funny. I would have put this show on a Friday night, and not spoil the reputation of ABC1’s Wednesday Comedy line up.

  10. this bloke will never be funny. strauchnie isn’t funny and never was. the bounce was a massive flop and by the end of rove. his jokes weren’t even remotely close to even wanting to listen to them, they were that bad

  11. “said he initially wasn’t sure if he wanted the role” … but then realised its a job, something he needs. As for trying to emulate Spicks and Specks’ success but on a sporting basis, SBS already tried this – “The Squiz”, which I think didn’t do too good.

Better keep attending auditions Helliar … I smell another flop (and I doubt the ABC will say “it’ll be back later” after they axe it a few episodes in!

  12. Why do networks keep giving this unfunny idiot a job ?
Have they not realised he is the male version of Jackie O ? Like her, every show he’s involved in is rubbish.
