Kyle disses X Factor winner’s song

Kyle Sandilands has bagged the format of The X Factor, claiming the winner's song didn't suit his act, crooner Andrew Lawson.

X Factor judge Kyle Sandilands last night bagged the song written for the potential winner of the show tonight, “Somewhere in the World.”

All three finalists, Sally Chatfield, Altiyan Childs and Andrew Lawson, performed their own take on the song in the race to win the title tonight.

But after Sandilands’ mentored young crooner Andrew Lawson copped criticism from judges Ronan Keating, Natalie Imbruglia and Guy Sebastian, Sandilands hit back, dissing the song they had been lumped with.

Sandilands hit out at the the format of the show.

“That song lends itself to a big, belty vocal and it was never going to work for you,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate but one song for everyone I don’t think works. But that’s what we’ve got to work with, so that’s what people have got to vote for.”

Later on The Xtra Factor, Lawson confirmed that Sandilands expressed what he was feeling.

The dissing of the winner’s song will make it difficult for Lawson and Sony should he defeat the odds and become a surprise winner tonight. It is reminiscent of the 2007 Australian Idol when runner up Matt Corby bagged the song “Here I Am” ahead of the final.

“Look, it’s an Idols song,” he said at the time. “It’s not something I’d choose to release.

“Yes, I’m being diplomatic. Even though this competition has made me look like I’m into pop, I’m really not.”

Sandilands also noted that Altiyan Childs forgot the lyrics to “Don’t Change” when he performed with INXS.

Meanwhile fellow finalist Sally Chatfield told The Xtra Factor she only met Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay ten minutes before duetting with him onstage last night.

  1. Andrew, at least knows what he is suited to which is something. There are some songs he does really well and neither he or Sally have forgotten their words have they or run off to their caves?. .That singer with Sally was just plain ignorant and INXS didn’t seem to be as impressed with Altivan as he was with them . Altiyan with all his gestures puts me off , I am annoyed that he has been given extra chances after stuffing up his words and not showing up for his rehearsals. Anyone else would have been shown the door
I hope Sally wins, she is fantastic and I have voted for her and for Andrew. Actually with Guy’s groups all out why does he still get to pass comment?.

  2. It isn’t a good song, but if Andrew had a decent enough voice and sang it well, Kyle would have praised him to the heavens. Altiyan with INXS was pretty bad and made JD Fortune seem so much better. None of them will sell millions of records around the world, as the judges keep saying, look at Guy Sebastian he is fairly successful and been releasing music for 7 yrs now and still hasn’t sold that many records overseas.

  3. It isn’t so much that Kyle tells the truth – it’s the way he tells it and when, that i find offensive. It comes across mean spirited, petty and as a particularly bitter case of sour grapes. Resorting to cheap shots, flimsy excuses and displaying ignorance does him no favours. On a happier assessment, Nat has come across really well, as has Guy, Ronan and the man with the broadest grin in showbiz – Luke Jacobz.

  4. Andrew Lawson’s verson of the song, was the most clear and honest of all , I loved it, the boy has got the strongest voice, very little experiance and does not pretend. I would not be surprised if he wins and his version of the song becomes the no1 hit. Kyle please do not allow the other judges to bag and put the boy down this much, they should not be allowed to that, this far in the competition. He does not say much but given time and freedom , he will shine in every song. I have recorded the boys song and had been listening to it all morning. Best of luck Andrew.

  5. Kyle spoke the truth. Don’t bag him when he is right. The song is awful. There was definitely no chemistry between Sally and Jay Kay. He barely looked at her. I was wondering what they problem was. Sally did a good job anyway.
Poor Andrew. He seems like a nice boy. Don’t know how he got to the final.

  6. @philm the final round it was Sally, then Andrew with the winners single and then Altiyan closed with Living on a Prayer. I did turn off before Altiyan started, so perhaps they let Andrew sing a fifth song to close the show and I missed it?

In any event, if Altiyan doesn’t win, I’ll eat at McDonalds.

  7. Altiyan is obviously going to win, unfortunately. But thats what you get when you have a famous singer with millions going around splashing your name and face everywhere.
Andrew did a great job, but then with all the verbal bashing of his performances, the poor kid was clearly destroyed on the inside. Which is no way build up his self esteem before the biggest night of his life.
Kyle was right, the one song for all idea is bad.
Give them all a song that suits them.

  8. I do not watch tthe show…..but talking to family and friends this morning….who do….the general consensus is…..that the song was awfull for anyone….and those I conversed with….young and old….would not be interested in purchasing it.

  9. It was obvious that Sally only met Jay Kay 10 minutes prior. The performance was noticibly messy and awkward. Sally did a great job staying professional and battling through to the end.

  10. I haven’t watched x factor at all but I agree with Bruce Banner. I’ve barely heard of Sally or Andrew but Altiyan’s name has been plastered all over the bottom of channel Seven programs for the last week (eg.Altyian sings with INXS). I don’t know whether he’s the audience fave or simply the one seven wants to win. I admit I’m curious as to who won in the end.

  11. I completely agree with Kyle (and i am not a fan of andrew at all) its a stupid song, why do these shows always have to release a ballad type song as the winning song. Also they should be giving each person there own type of song, play to each of their strengths and maybe they will actually do well once the contest ends

  12. I think Kyle’s comment was fair enough. He was speaking the truth. Andrew didn’t nail the song – ‘One song for everyone I don’t think works’ – therefore each contestant may have had a song that didn’t suit their voice. But they had to sing it to the best of their ability. If anything, Kyle was defending Andrew not dissing him.

  13. Agree that it is a crap song, and doesn’t suit Andrew at all. But it’s clear who will win, just look at what they did with the performances. Throughout the show it started with Sally singing first, Altiyan second then Andrew third… until the final song… it went Sally, Andrew and Altiyan to finish the show.

Gee… I wonder who is being favoured?
