Who loves a wayward kangaroo on Australia Day? Everyone.

With all these News shows at TEN, Producers should start avoiding duplicate content.

If you were watching TEN News programmes last night, you may have caught an item about a kangaroo on the race track of the annual races at Hanging Rock.

It was on TEN Evening News (Melbourne) and The 7PM Project.

Or you may have heard talking heads discussing whether our flag should drop the Union Jack.

That was on 6PM with George Negus and The 7PM Project.

On Monday night I saw items on the rising cost of fruit and veggies on both TEN Evening News and 7PM.

And I even saw George Negus on two shows.

TEN needs to rein this in.

Doing an update on 5pm stories at 6:30pm for a rotating audience is one thing, but are Producers actually liasing with one another about their content?

What passes for a story on one programme should be avoided by another, unless it’s so big it can’t be ignored, or if it’s a story still in motion. Maybe they can find a different angle. If talkback radio programmes can avoid duplication TV should be able to.

That said, you have to feel for The 7PM Project.

It is the last cab off the rank, so it’s always going to have the harder job. It now has 5 separate News bulletins airing directly before it, plus Negus. And they were there first!

Time to dig deep and get as creative as a Dave Hughes segue…

  1. I’ve already ditched the 6-7pm hour on TEN after just 2 days. Its just not there for me and well its not the Channel TEN i know and love. I will have my local news on Prime or NBN then have Seven at 6:30pm followed by 7pm Project. It was the first time i saw that Kangaroo on 7pm Project. I just feel that Ten is all over the place atm. They are trying to make it work but it just doesn’t and its only been 3 days! Its a complete mess and until the fix it people won’t tune in.

  2. It’s not a walk across the room, ‘David from Melbourne’, it’s a phone cal or email. Usually a conference call, which the network I work for uses, clears this duplication up each day. No one has walked anywhere since email.

  3. If 7PM hadn’t shown the kangaroo which was hilarious then I would have missed it as that’s the only channel 10 show I watch for news. I agree with others, doubt many are watching it all from 5.00

  4. I agree, there definitely needs more communication within as it all ends up on the one channel. Part of the problem is that the Negus show ( and that’s what it is ) eminates from Sydney (I think) and 7.00pm is from Melbourne and that is always a problem especially when they cover the same material. It is not just a matter of walking across the corridor to keep in touch with the minute by minute developments. If we want rolling news we can go to ABC24 or Sky and although the 10 concept may look good economically on paper the reality is different. Time and ratings will tell I suppose, but can they give Negus a couple of years to settle in. By then he will find it very hard to read the Autocue!

  5. I’m very sceptical about this whole 2 and a half hours of news Ch. 10 has.

Either the 5pm or 6.30pm news should be cut out – you really don’t need both.

Maybe just start with a 6.00pm half hour news, and then George Negus followed by the 7pm Project. Do something else with the 5 – 6pm slot – maybe produce a new comedy/drama/lifestyle show.

Ch. 10 are going into news overkill and it will bite them where it hurts soon enough.

  6. I am yet to watch the 2.5 News wedge, and cross-over is inevitable, but as you say – a different angle is required if the story is going to run, especially to shows either side of it.

It’s early days, but certainly if content is king, then these issues should have been addressed 6 months ago.

  7. I’m not so sure. How many people sit down and watch all those shows in a row.
Cable news networks talk about the same stories all day long on each show.
