AFL promo loves ripping off NBA
Seven's 2011 promo for AFL is a dead ringer for TNT's 2010 promo for NBA.

Yer so what.. Every Network does it, they take stuff from others and make it their own.. its not just 7 whos doin it
When was the last time 7 did anything original and half decent
Before I watched the clips, I thought: “Let’s give people the benefit of the doubt. Even if the two promos are similar, it’s not impossible that the makers of the AFL clip to have never seen the NBA one”.
After watching them… It’s very very similar. Even the graphics.
But then if it’s so evidently ‘copied’, do you think it was made my the same agency?
Obvious copy, but they still did a pathetic job in comparison.
Why do the networks do this…? It just emphasises everything that is wrong with Australian TV – lack of creativity, total disregard for intellectual property and worst of all an underestimation of their audience.
By making a promo highlighting how much players love a game because of it’s unique qualities, by copying another sport’s promo, really does leave me chaking my head.
Why not utilise the creative forces we have in this country… they have in the past and created some amazing campaigns… “I’d like to see that!”
Love them both. An Aussie station ripping off an American one is nothing new, though. Nine did it only a couple of years ago with their Twenty20 intro, the one with Cog.
Aren’t we capable of doing something original?
Oh. So Channel seven stole the concept from NBA?
Not surprised out all.
Yes, a definate rip off!
typical 7, can’t do anything original
its funny there is nothing new in television…we have made comments about that fact for ages… but to rip off a promo for such a high profile sport in a country that everyone looks to…. its not a bad thing…its just embarrassing…..
but thats the 7 thing… someone else is doing it better so lets just copy them…they did it with their news.. with all the ex 9 people…so why wouldnt this be any different…. still a good promo though…
That’s disgusting Channel 7! Can’t believe they would rip off such a great sport with a horrible sport!
More reasons to prove the AFL and Channel 7 are hopeless!
I’ve learnt one thing, American sportsmen can read a script more convincingly than Australian footballers.
Now all they have to do is get Ablett, Swan and Judd on the same team and take their talents south to St.Kilda beach.
the only difference I can see is that the NBA players are actually talking from the heart, and not reading promo producer scripted cliches that seem extraordinarily fake like in the seven version
No surprise there. AFL are basing there business model heavily on the success of the NBA over the next few years. They even flew a number of NBA delegates out for the marketing/sponsors conference on the Gold Coast a few months back.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see cheerleaders and half-time shows before long 🙂
Wow. Two points:
1) If this wasn’t done by the same production company, it is a blatant rip off from the NBA ad.
2) The NBA players seemed like they meant what they said. Our AFL players lacked any sincerity, and looked as though they were hired actors reading a script.
Pure coincidence!
If it works for NBA, its proven and may work for AFL.
The AFL version was probably done but some 25yr old promo producer using After Effects thinking he’d knock off the NBA concept for his showreel.
Typical Seven, can’t do anything by themselves.
Pathetic. “No one will notice down under”
*Contractually obligated post about how this is typical 7 and the sooner they lose the AFL rights the better*
So? It’s a good ad.
So sad that Australian networks do this.
YouTube hasbeen bad for the Australian TV promos industry. One click, you don’t have to come up with any ideas or creative!
No! Surely not! A TV network would never copy another networks promo!
Hello! This is television where no idea is original and no blatant lift is frowned upon.
