Hey Hey a victim of revenue vs cost

Daryl Somers says Hey Hey's best chance now is in the second half of the year, but the economics don't stack up very well.

A return of Hey Hey it’s Saturday looks off the table for the first half of 2011 and is no guarantee for the second half.

Host Daryl Somers has told Facebook fans that the news is not good for the show’s prospects.

“There is a chance of something happening in the second half of the year but sadly nothing definitive. And if we did return it would probably not be on a Saturday as according to Nine the ‘economics’ don’t stack up: not enough people watching TV generally on a weekend compared to mid week viewing, therefore revenue verses the cost of mounting a two hour variety show like ours does not work. They can make more profit with a cheaper program,” he wrote.

“This is the business of television, no sentiment or viewer loyalty comes into it I’m afraid. I have made the point that we were never given a chance to consolidate either in our midweek slot or on Saturdays. Both seasons were interrupted by Rugby coverage and even though Nine agreed our figures were strong against the juggernaut of MasterChef and indeed extended our first season by 3 eps. , The Farmer Wants a Wife replaced us in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games.”

Until now Somers Carroll has retained many of its production team and is currently producing a documentary on the history of GTV9, which is good news.

Fans of the show have been running a fervent Logie campaign for the show and its cast.

Nine’s Director of Television Michael Healy recently told TV Tonight, “I’m a very big fan of Daryl Somers and I have incredible respect for him.

“He has been very successful and he’s done a lot for the industry so he deserves all of our respect and certainly mine personally.”

Neither Hey Hey nor Somers have yet been inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame.

  1. That’s a shame if he/the show misses out this year – the 40th anniversary of the start of Hey Hey this year. I respect the beloved members of the hallowed hall – Bert and Don and Graham and seminal figures like Grundy, Gyngell and Ken G Hall – but there must be a good case to argue for either Daryl or the show. Mike Walsh i don’t think has ever been a warm/cuddly industry type (the criticism of Somers I suspect) nor Sam Chisholm or Mike Willisee terribly user friendly. It is curiously remiss whether one likes him or not – the longevity and success is undeniable. In an industry of wannabes and fly-by-nights – endurance is a key.

  2. I’ve never been a fan of Somers, but have enjoyed Hey Hey since being a kid myself, and then as a young adult. The reunion shows were good. the 2010 seaosn uneven and somewhat predictible, but oft times enjoyable. I didn’t realise that Daryl hadn’t been entered into the Logies hall of fame. On the basis that some of the others (Maure Fields, Ruth Cracknell, Steve Irwin, John Clarke, Bill Collins) are in – he should be. Says a lot about how he may be regarded by either other industry stalwarts, or the Logies committee – one a subset of the other? If they don’t like him, place the show into the Hall of Fame – it is legendary.

  3. I don’t regret the loss of Hey Hey, but the article sadly makes it clear that none of the commercial networks are likely to put original Australian content on Saturday nights and we are going to be stuck with movie repeats until time immemorial.

  4. Haha! Hello again Hey Hey / Daryl baggers! Nice to see you come out of the woodwork yet again, on cue as always and with a large bunch of freshly cut poppies in hand. I must say I haven’t ever met or overheard anyone bag this show in public. Only resigned to the privacy and anonymity of online commenting.

  5. Haters can sod off… go and compalin about something else. There are plenty of people who love it! Me included, its just a fun little show…hope we see more in the future

  6. Typical Channel 9, this Is the Best show on Nine…why take it away! Both Hey Hey and Daryl should go into the Logie Hall of Fame…why aren’t they there?
