The Amazing Race‘s New Zealand-born host Phil Keoghan is on a Detour he didn’t expect to make.
On his Twitter feed he said:
“Very serious situation in Christchurch after another major earthquake, just found out my parents are safe but damage in the CBD extreme.”
Then:
“After a lot of thought Im heading 2 ChCh NZ I want to share a more personal side of whats happening, look for story next week on Early Show.”

@Dick the recent earthquake, cyclone and floods barely made a dent in US media, despite the devastation. Anything that The Philiminator can do to raise awareness (and funds for charity) is fine, even in the eyes of those who are cynical like you.
Anyhow “The Early Show” is a breakfast-tv show, not his show. And the more who watch, the more who are aware.
@Dick – Phil was born in Christchurch!!! So he has every right to ‘spin his concern’!!!
@Dick – I think it’s a common response, he’s really only drawing awareness to the matter which is a positive thing.
Even Bear Grylls tweeted “Just finished filming New Zealand man vs wild in the south island where we felt the earthquake. Praying for those caught in the epi-centre.” followed by a video link to a CNN interview with Anderson Cooper on his facebook discussing his experience.
A little while ago I saw him doing a tourism ad for NZ, and I think one was for Christchurch. Hopefully he can help get tourism there back on its feet.
What a legend.
Nice to see he’s been able to spin his concern for ChCh into a sweet plug for a TV show.
Phil got his start in NZ TV on a show called Spot On, that was filmed in Dunedin and Christchurch, so for me he has a significant connection to the city.
I can see why phil is kiwi . His dad was the pit stop greater when tar went to NZ in tar 13
