Airdate: 2011: 87 Days Of Disaster

Updated: TEN quickly amends plans for next week while it awaits new episodes of Glee.

Fans of Glee will be in for a long wait for new episodes after tonight.

The next new episode isn’t scheduled to air in the US until April 12 -and

bear in mind we have non ratings from April 17 – April 30.

Viewers who want fast-tracking should remember there is often a downside, dictated by American networks.

In its place next week TEN airs a special 2011: 87 Days Of Disaster.

There are no details on the content of this one yet, but personally I don’t care to spend an hour being reminded of what we’ve all been through this year.

Glee has been an escapist hour of television, so unless this offers us something more than telling us what we already know it could be a switch-off to audiences. More vision of disasters on top of the fatigue we already have?

Just sayin’…

It airs at 7:30pm Monday March 28 on TEN.

UPDATE: Wow that was fast. 50 minutes after publishing this story TEN has pulled it and replaced it with: The Oprah Winfrey Show: Oprah & The Cast Of Glee (rpt).

  1. I think you’ll find most hour long shows take about 8 days to shoot, some shows take longer depending on their complexity, CGI and location shoots. Not sure if Glee takes longer with it’s musical numbers.

  2. Back in the olden days, hour long TV shows took less than a week to shoot, so they could have full 26 episode seasons run without a break.

These days, it takes ten days to shoot each episode, at least, because they put more production values into them, so they can’t run in unbroken seasons anymore, they need to take scheduled breaks to give them catch-up time. This manifests in a mid-season hiatus, or the occasional one or two week break spread throughout, often timed to coincide with some other event, like sports or a public holiday.

To us, those breaks seem arbitrary and random, but for the Americans they know it’s July 4th or Superbowl or Oscar night or whatever, so the break makes sense to them.

  3. I’m glad Ten have come to their senses. Far too soon and a bit tacky given that Japan’s disaster is still unfolding.

Would it have told us anything we didn’t already know or would it have simply presented us with the opportunity to voyeuristically view the same graphic footage that we have already seen many times, complete with overly dramatic narration? Perhaps it would have been that woman who does the awful faux gravitas promos for their drama shows.

  4. I remember watching this Oprah: Glee special as well. As Craig said, it was in 4:3 which was perplexing… maybe they’ll show the HD version this time, well the 16:9 SD version? I must say this is much better than revisiting the horrific events that have happened in the past three months.

  5. @vinny – that can only be answered by FOX.
When Glee returns there will be 6 new eps for a season total of 22.

As for the Glee Oprah Winfrey special I remember when it aired before it was only 4:3 for some reason, even though it was aired in HD in the US, maybe this time they will fix that?

Not that I want to be reminded I’d still like to see the ’87 Days Of Disaster’ special, maybe they are waiting until winter, just in cast 😆

  6. @vinny, that’s just how tv works in the US the networks stretch 22ep seasons across 42 ratings weeks. Procedurals alternate between new eps and repeats and serial dramas take lots of long breaks.

An outdated daytime show rerun is a sad excuse for primetime material.

    – you blogged, Ten listened!!!??

Thought the same when I first saw this one coming up.

  8. @vinny: I am not sure why Glee goes on such a long break for Glee, but when it returns in April it will have an unbroken run (at least in the US) until the season finale in late May.

  9. Why not they can add re-runs of Glee starting next week in order for viewers to catch-up on episode missed and put the 87 Days of Disaster special on hold?
