Melbourne viewers will see a heavily branded special this Thursday night to mark the reopening of the 100 year old Myer store.

Eddie McGuire and Livinia Nixon will host a live half-hour special as celebs turn out for the reopening after a major refurbishment.

There have been previous reports that A Current Affair will also broadcast from the Bourke Street store.

Admittedly it’s a bit of a grand lady and the art-deco Mural Hall is quite a sight (pictured).

In one of the most extravagant social events of the year, the city’s A-list will gather to toast 100 years of Myer Melbourne and the reopening of its brand new Bourke Street flagship store.

A who’s-who of Melbourne, from Ruby Rose, Guy Sebastian, Myer ambassador Jess Hart and International “femiman” Anrej Pejic to Molly Meldrum, Natalie Bassingthwaite and Bert and Patti Newton, will strut their stuff down the Myer Black Carpet dressed by the store’s family of fashion designers.

Jennifer Hawkins, the face of Myer, will share with viewers her typical day at the retailer while fellow ambassadors and Channel Nine presenters Rebecca Judd and Lauren Phillips will take the audience on a tour of the newly renovated store.

Viewers will experience a behind-the-scenes look at the Galerie de Parfum, the Myer VIP personal shopping service, and the lavish Salon Champagne Bar.

After chatting with designers Wayne Cooper and Leona Edmiston, Livinia will walk viewers through Myer’s illustrious history in the famous Mural Hall. The fully restored, heritage-listed ballroom has played host to countless memorable events, including the only Dior and Chanel fashion shows outside of Paris in the 1940s.

The $300million rebuild of the city store has been four years in the making and now Myer unveils a stunning department store of true international standard. With nine state-of-the-art levels of fashion, beauty, lifestyle and entertainment, Myer Melbourne will rival the best that Paris, New York and Milan have to offer.

Myer Celebrates airs live Thursday, March 31, at 7.00pm on Nine (Melbourne).

  1. As myer employee I can shed some internal light on this:

Scott: Yes true it is basically a half hour infomercial, but something Mystore and Ch 9 have been doing for years in the form of bourke st being open with a take what you want attitude for channel 9 and to a lessor extent channel 7s wardrobe departments.

In regards to buying online, very true and this reflected in the sh*te sales figures recently and the company crying very very poor.

Thanks for being generous in giving the place 10 years, i honestly don’t give it 5 — trust me, most of the staff scheme will be cashed in september significantly watering down the already non existent share price. The building was actually designed in being interchangeable to a mini mall.

We paid close to $150 M of the total 300m bill. The landlord at the site Colonial First State Reailty (part of the commbank) paid the rest, in addition to some development grants for mural hall from the city of mel and vic govs.

I know it is sad because back in the grand old days, it would be the party of the decade. The aforementioned “celebrities” all in some form or aspect are related to myer e.g. Ruby Rose has a licence deal with us, to whack her name on a range of clothes. Patti in theory cant show due to her contracts with the Millers group, so i think Bert will be alone.

SSorry I know not really the forum but…….

  2. So, a “who’s-who of Melbourne” equates to Ruby Rose, Guy Sebastian, Jess Hart, Anrej Pejic, Molly Meldrum, Natalie Bassingthwaite and Bert and Patti Newton. Kind of sad really..

  3. @ Southpatt.

Myer did not pay for all of the redevelopment. They now lease the site and Lend Lease (correct me if I am wrong) now own the building.

  4. Sigh – a half hour retail infomerical in prime time? It just gets worse and worse doesn’t it.

The kind of products that Myer sells most people would purchase online now anyway. Store front retail is a thing of the past.

Mark my words – in ten years that ‘grand old lady’ will just be yet another boarded up and empty shopfront, albeit one in a prime location.
