  1. great coverage by nhk japan. shame WIN TV cut to local news at 6.30 and at 7pm a 30 minute delayed showing of ACA. times like these ACA needs to be live.

  2. All of the networks should have suspended normal coverage last night. This will likely prove to be one of the biggest disasters in history. The networks simply had no right to screen anything other than news coverage, sporting committments be damned.

  3. @Ashton: Seven has the AFL pre-season grand final between Essendon and Collingwood and there was no way it will be pre-empted for the earthquake coverage. But I feel sorry for fans of Outrageous Fortune who were waiting to see the final ever episode, only to discover it was pre-empted for a special edition of Ten Late News. Will it be rescheduled?

  4. Thank you, Ashton!

I can predict the response though, which would be geography. Yet, when Indonesia was going through the same thing in 2005, Seven & Nine only started ‘caring’ (with extended news bulletins) when the number of Australian deaths were revealed.

Anyway, I really admire how cool, calm & collected the people of Japan are during days like this – everyone from PM Naoto Kan, down.

  5. I think it’s up to the networks to decide when they break into normal programming for breaking news, but just remember many people have said there was too much news coverage for the recent QLD Floods/Cyclone & NZ Earthquake distasters, now it’s the opposite, not enough, I don’t get it. Soon enough people will want 7 & 9 to interrupt normal programming for a car crash in the US.

  6. @ Ashton, I want to correct your post, Seven suspended alot of their programming to cover Australians dying in QLD floods, and our Closest Neighbour and ally in New Zealand when the Earthquake occurered in Christchurch.

Japan may be going through the 7th biggest earthquake in the past 100 years, but what’s rolling news coverage going to do to change it? Viewers are at “tragedy fatigue” unfortunately at this point and extended news bulletins and updates are great, but no need to cancel regular programming completely.

I can find out what happened there in 10 minutes, I don’t need 4 hours of it plastered all over my TV screen.

  7. Racism really, before the cyclone there was a lack of coverage in north QLD, even now with more floods we are getting next to no info on the current state of things, ditto for the cyclone in Darwin and the floods in WA. It seems it’s only when it hits a major population area like Brisbane or is the biggest cyclone in a 100 years that it gets any major attention by most FTA media.

But does it matter? I mean that’s the point of the new digital channels like ABC 24, do you really need coverage of the same info on Nine and the others? I prefer they we have the choice and not 5 main channels covering the same news and like NZ with the exact same video feed.

  8. @JM – It’s true though, Seven suspended a lot of their programming to cover caucasians dying in QLD Floods and NZ’s Earthquake. Why don’t they suspend programming to cover the world’s 7th most devastating earthquake?

  9. Such horrible news for Japan. A tad harsh to accuse networks of racism though. Nine had a “Queensland Special” of ACA at 6:30pm then had a Nine News Special at 7pm instead of The Big Bang Theory before going to the NRL at 7:30pm.

  10. Terrible news for Japan!

Not surprised to hear about Seven & Nine’s usual racism today. For FTA viewers, the best place for pictures & information is either SBS One, News24 or ABC1. They have either been taking NHK World direct or BBC World who are taking NHK themselves (which sometimes sees three layers of news supers on one screen).

  11. Once again, it’s ABC News 24 that leads the way. They broken from normal programming to cover it. ABC1 in Queensland are also simulcasting ABC News 24. Seven and Nine both showed their usual 4:30pm news on a hour delay (the quake happened at 3:50pm QLD time), and still had time to report about Pandas born in Sweeden after they mention the quake.

  12. I don’t understand why channel 7 isn’t covering this? I guess they don’t care about people over seas, only people from Australia and New Zealand. But good too see 9 covering it

  13. Very sad, I absolutely love Japan. It is a great place to visit.

I hate to do this but…..”The Richter scale has been superseded by the Moment Magnitude Scale.” This has actually been annoying me since the NZ earthquake.

  14. Bloody tragic news,we are watching Nine News Special with live coverage. The 7.00PM Project showing that Charlie Sheen interview, what a disgrace they should be more concerned with Earthquake news.Channel Nine crossed for latest news,Just saw former Today Tonight host Anna Coren hosting a live news bulletin
