Prime7 adds AFL to 7mate

While we await the new Anti-Siphoning List the government has been granting broadcasters more flexibility for sport on their channels.

Last night’s AFL match on TEN was also broadcast around the country on ONE.

In NSW and Queensland such a move has been traditionally impossible under the anti-siphoning list (and until the revised list is legislated it still is). But TEN sought permission from Senator Conroy to play the season opener on its digital channel, which was granted by the government.

From tonight PRIME7 will also televise 2011 Friday Night AFL on its multi-channel, 7mate at 8.30pm.

It will be the only FTA channel for viewers across regional New South Wales and the ACT to see the code every Friday night at the same time as AFL fans in Victoria.

Chief Executive Officer Doug Edwards said: “We are very happy to work with the AFL and the Seven Network to give viewers in regional NSW and the ACT this exclusive broadcast of Friday Night AFL. I would also like to acknowledge the support of Senator [Stephen] Conroy who has authorised the use of our digital multi-channel for the broadcast of these Friday Night AFL games.”

Kicking off 7mate’s Friday night coverage this week will be a rematch of the 2009 Grand Final between the Geelong and St Kilda under lights from the MCG.

In contrast to the Prime7 move, the game doesn’t air on Seven in Sydney until 11:30pm.

  1. Woohooo i love being in sydney and having prime7 tuned in digitally woohooo, afl on primate when seven sydney is playing some repeat movie maybe…

  2. “why should they show it??

9,000 in sydney watched the game last night on One….

    Majority of people don’t care?”

The ‘majority’ of people in Sydney only watch when a team is winning. For example when the Swans have done well in previous years. You only have to look at the pitiful crowds at NRL matches.

  3. Awesome news. Finally we are getting the AFL at a decent time. 🙂

Only thing that sucks is i won’t be able to record or watch The Cape and The Event as this is scheduled on 7mate at this time.

  4. And yet AFL states like WA have to wait four hours on ONE, Ten, Seven, 7mate to watch games.

Why aren’t they showing games live on multi-channels in the states that actually want to watch the footy?

  5. Why is it that the sunshine coast/gold coast get a better deal than Brisbane viewers?

Surely this 7mate arrangement would rate higher than the steaming pile of turd they plan on putting on that channel tonight?

  6. @sam what about Sydney?

Did you not look at the ratings One got last night showing AFL in Sydney?

It only managed 9,000 viewers and was beaten by everything on every main channel and multi channel thar was shown at the same time.

  7. Most likely it will be upscaled SD.

Seven have a track record of showing very little HD sports. AFL have only been in HD on Seven during finals in the past, and even then this is no guarantee.

Seven’s best HD effort to date has been Australian Open 2010 (but not 2011), and Beijing 2008 (which was mostly supplied by the unilateral broadcasts).

  8. 7QLD in regional Qld is airing AFL on 7mate 8:30pm Fridays as well. 7QLD is 100% owned and run by the 7 Network just like in the 5 capital cities. Maybe 7 have decided not to air AFL on 7mate in Sydney because most people will be watching NRL on 9 from 7:30-11:30 and 7 want to maintain 3 non sporting alternatives in Sydney. What would AFL get in Sydney on 7mate? My guess 25,000 at most and that’s really not good enough.

  9. Good news for AFL fans in regional NSW and QLD, but there may be a few complaints from other people that they would miss out on new episodes of The Event and The Cape (which start in the next two weeks).

  10. Sorry for being lazy, but can someone remind me
    1) Does 7 have any way of screening AFL in HD… on 7mate?
    2) To our knowledge, do any AFL games actually get filmed in hd?

  11. Wow. So in a rare move, the country folk are ahead of the city. They get HD coverage while us in the city are stuck with crappy pixelated SD.

Personally believe that the networks should decide which channel they use to show anything. Shouldn’t be up to government to decide.

If you don’t have a digital tv or set top box by now, you deserve to miss out.
