TEN reinstates 5pm weekend News

Weekend News is about to return to 5pm as TEN tries to claw back lost ground.

The backflipping begins at TEN as the network announces it will reinstate TEN News at Five to weekends.

On the day the network annointed a new CEO it announced its weekend News bulletin will return to 5pm.

TEN vacated the slot in late January when it introduced state-based bulletins to 6pm. In doing so it effectively gave up the slot it had nurtured to the Nine Network, which successfully introduced a First at Five bulletin some weeks ago.

But the 6pm bulletin has failed to dent Seven News and Nine News at 6pm, often pulling some of the biggest audiences of the week.

From Saturday TEN reinstates a national bulletin at 5pm followed by Jamie’s Thirty Minute Meals at 5:30pm and the half hour state-produced TEN Evening News at 6pm.

“We have long held a prominent news position at 5pm in the weekend schedule and we are not willing to give up that ground any longer,” chief programming officer David Mott said.

“Clearly there is a viewer thirst for choice when it comes to weekend news and we are well placed to provide them what they want with our 5pm and 6pm news coverage.”

There are also rumours TEN could shift 6PM with George Negus to 6:30pm.

Yesterday TEN appointed James Warburton as its new CEO, to begin in July.

  1. only Ten would hand the others 700k viewers on a plater after dumping 5.00pm news on weekends and not registered first at 5.00 as nine has taken slogan
Lets hope viewers will flock back.

  2. Good to see the 5pm news return on the weekends but as an AFL supporter in Sydney, i’m going to miss Sports Tonight which always had a great rundown of AFL and Rugby League and even some horse racing if we were lucky. I don’t understand the thinking – they made 5pm theirs (week days and weekends) only to toss it all away in a bid to lure rusted on viewers away from Ch7 & Ch9. It was never going to work.

  3. Finally, common sense ensues, altho’ perhaps it’s not so common among the Ten decision-makers. Now they just need to move Negus to 6:30 and get him to tone down playing the “Grandad” and things should go much better for them.

  4. Now to fix the weekdays. As much as I dislike sport 1hd needs to remain as a sports channel, I never want a return to the bad old days with mindless sport on all channels every weekend.

  5. The craziest move for years, dumping the 5pm weekend news. Must have been a bad batch of something someone was on at TEN when that brainwave came up.

  6. Please, please, please stop repeating that horrendous news program at 10.30. Who wants to watch old news at that time and it’s really annoying that it delays the late news.

Also, need to brief George on the demographic. Pretending you don’t understand google or who Lindsay, Charlie etc is makes him look out of touch with the audience.

  7. The big question is why didn’t they reinstall Sports Tonight at 5.30pm. They need to get rid of the ST branding in the 6pm Evening News aswell.

  8. Thank God.. Now i dnt need to watch 9 News @ 5 anymore!

It would be good to see who wins the 5pm timeslot on the weekends, out of TEN and Nine.

  9. Well Ten News at 5 is what everyone is used to. So what is happening to the 3rd and final season of H20: Just Add Water? As my dad and I have been enjoying watching it on Sunday afternoons at 5pm.
