When is the News not really the News?

Yesterday’s Nine News at Five reported that an accident in the Eastlink Tunnel in Ringwood, east of Melbourne, caused traffic chaos.

“A utility carrying toxic materials crashed into a car and burst into flames,” said Peter Overton.

“Motorists jumped from their cars as smoke filled the air activating emergency sprinklers.”

Just one problem.

It was a mock exercise to train emergency workers. The tunnel had been closed by authorities for half a day. Camera crews were on hand to capture the scene.

At least Nine News Melbourne and Seven News Melbourne gave out the correct info at 6pm.

  1. Ah Michael and your beloved GTV News. I agree. Far more important stories to report (correctly). “A thrashing”? Um,
    1 Seven News – Sun Seven 364,000(Mel)
2 Nine News Sunday Nine 357,000(Mel)

  2. “Could the Sydney bureau not have called their Melbourne colleagues to confirm details?”
I’m assuming the “News at Five” was done from Sydney, although not aired in Sydney or NSW.
But why would Sydney call Melbourne? If this was a Melbourne item surely it would have been sent to Sydney by Nine Melbourne (?). Correction or not, it was a gaffe, perhaps corrected when the switchboard lit up.

  3. The scary thing is how the images seemed to confirm the reality of the story. They used to say “seeing is believing” but not anymore. How are we to know that what they present to us as news has actually occurred. We need to be able to trust our sources of information – they should be checking, not us. No wonder conspiracy theories abound when you can’t trust the images that you are presented with…maybe man never really landed on the moon afterall (joke).

  4. This is an outrageous example of misinformation. What if someone in Sydney had relatives or friends they knew used the tunnel regularly? This could have caused unecessary fear and concern.

Is no research or secondary confirmation sought prior to putting programs to air?

Could the Sydney bureau not have called their Melbourne colleagues to confirm details?

    Utterly shameful.
