Yesterday’s Nine News at Five reported that an accident in the Eastlink Tunnel in Ringwood, east of Melbourne, caused traffic chaos.

“A utility carrying toxic materials crashed into a car and burst into flames,” said Peter Overton.

“Motorists jumped from their cars as smoke filled the air activating emergency sprinklers.”

Just one problem.

It was a mock exercise to train emergency workers. The tunnel had been closed by authorities for half a day. Camera crews were on hand to capture the scene.

At least Nine News Melbourne and Seven News Melbourne gave out the correct info at 6pm.

  1. I like the comment suggesting Seven and Nine should move their headquarters from Sydney to Melbourne. I mean, why have your HQ in the media capital of the country? It just doesn’t make sense really! 😛

    Thanks for the laugh…

  2. Overton’s clarification was seven minutes later, and he said: “A few moments ago we brought you a story about a collision in the Melba Tunnel in Melbourne. We just want to remind you and make it clear it was a mock drill. It was an exercise involving emergency services”. Eh? Remind us? Cheeky use of words…
