ABC1: ANZAC Day 2011

Here are the state by state details of ANZAC Day Marches on ABC1 plus the Gallipoli Dawn Service, Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Service and the Lone Pine Service from Gallipoli.

2011 marks the 96th anniversary of the action by Australian, New Zealand and other Commonwealth troops in 1915.

ANZAC Day March 2011

NSW: ABC1 Monday, April 25 at 9.00am (LIVE)
In Sydney ex servicemen and women will march from the Martin Place Cenotaph, along George Street to the War Memorial in Hyde Park. Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, CVO, Governor of New South Wales, will lead the ANZAC Day March in Sydney and commentary is provided by Lt Col John Moore RFD. The NSW march will also be broadcast live in the ACT from 9.00 10.30am and in the NT from 9.00 – 11.00am.

ACT: ABC1 Monday, April 25 at 10.30am (LIVE)
Anzac Day from the Australian War Memorial will be hosted by ABC’s Canberra weekend newsreader Craig Allen who will be joined in commentary by War Memorial historian Dr Karl James. The National Ceremony will take place before the Stone Of Remembrance. The Anzac Day address will be delivered by Memorial council member and author Les Carlyon. Anzac Day from the Australian War Memorial will broadcast live to ACT on ABC1 and nationally on ABC News24.

VIC: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 9.00am (LIVE)
Hosted by ABC News presenter Ian Henderson with expert commentary from Neil Smith, ex-servicemen and women in Melbourne meet to take part in the annual march along St Kilda Road to the Shrine of Remembrance. This is followed by a Commemorative Service also held at the Shrine. The VIC march will also be broadcast live in TAS from 9.00 10.55am.

QLD: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 10.00am (LIVE)
In Brisbane the march converges on George Street and Adelaide Street with the Governor Penelope Wensley to give the salute. The march will be hosted by David Curnow, 7pm news reader, Leo Walsh, curator Qld military memorial museum, and Dr Jack Ford, military historian specialising in WW2. Jenny Woodward, 7pm news will provide live roving interviews.

TAS: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 10.55am (LIVE)
In Hobart ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in the annual march to the Hobart Cenotaph.

SA: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 9.00am (LIVE)
The local Dawn Service conducted at the War Memorial on North Terrace will be televised as a precursor to live coverage of the ANZAC Day March. Following the March will be the Service of Remembrance at the Cross of Sacrifice. The telecast will be hosted by Ian Henschke (891 Adelaide, mornings) who will be joined by respected academic, author and writer Professor Bill Gammage. 891 Adelaide’s ‘man about town’ TIM NOONAN, will be out and about ‘on the buses’ chatting with veterans who, although no longer able to complete the March on foot, are still as keen as ever to be a part of this very important day.

NT: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 11.00am (LIVE)
One of Australia’s most important national occasions, it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. In Darwin, ex-servicemen and women meet to take part in the Dawn Service at Cenotaph on the Esplanade, followed by the march down Knuckey Street in Darwin’s CBD. Emeritus Professor Alan Powell will provide the commentary.

WA: ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 9.30am (LIVE)
Commentators for the Perth ANZAC Day March and Service this year will be the regulars, Glenn Mitchell and Captain Wayne Gardiner. Because of road works in St George’s Terrace the marchers will follow a slightly different route – starting in the eastern end of the Terrace and accessing The Esplanade via Barrack Street.

Following the marches will be the Gallipoli, Villers-Bretonneux and the Lone Pine Gallipoli services.

Gallipoli Dawn Service 2011
National – ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 12.30pm (LIVE AEST)
ABC TV’s Message Stick presenter Miriam Corowa returns for her third presentation of this milestone broadcast and will host the Dawn Service from the Anzac Commemorative site at Canakkale, North Beach in Turkey.

Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Service
National – ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 1.30pm (LIVE AEST)

Lone Pine Service From Gallipoli
National – ABC1 – Monday, April 25 at 6.00pm
Miriam Corowa and the ABC team will cover the Lone Pine Commemorative Service, where one of the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign took place. The Battle of Lone Pine is remembered as a rarity for the ANZAC, as ‘success’ at the price of 2200 Australians and about 7000 Turks killed or wounded.

  1. @James , lets hope so , at times this ABC 24 can be quite unprofessional with there presentation especially in the news.Some of there news readers don’t inspire confidence.

  2. I’ll be interested to see what News 24 does – it’ll be their first ANZAC Day. They could provide really substantial coverage, showing services, marches, from Australia, NZ, and further afield throughout the whole day, whilst ABC1 is more focussed on the events of each state.
