US network ABC has cancelled not one but two long-running daytime soaps with All My Children and One Life to Live.
All My Children began in 1970 while One Life to Life started in 1968.
The climate hasn’t been good for daytime soaps following Guiding Light, As the World Turns and NBC’s Passions all axed in recent years.
General Hospital now stands as the last remaining daytime drama on ABC while Days of Our Lives was given a two-year renewal by NBC to September 2013 with an option for a renewal through to 2014. CBS, with The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful, will become the last network with more than one soap on its schedule.
ABC is replacing both soaps with talk shows, The Chew, a one-hour live show centered on food (produced by ex-pat Gordon Elliot no less) and The Revolution discussing relationships, family, food, style, home design, finance and more.

To Benjamin ,
I said that to you , not Benj. Anyway any format of any show can be cancelled for the exact same reasons , though I will be different and still wish your programs a long life. Thankyou.
Its just a reality that in this day and age there are several ways to record or catch up with programs that screened while at work or when asleep. Reruns of daytime shows at night and reruns of prime time shows in the day . Formats are out the window with recording and reruns.
7TWO aired All My Children for about a year or so-before dropping it late in 2010.
@ Benj, I’m not a fan of B&B. I just forgot to add it my soap cancellation list.
“They just want to see housewives screaming at each other and skanky kids in hot tubs. Sad.”
Agree, very sad – I once stumbled on a Jerry Springer show and couldn’t believe my eyes!
Trailer trash TV for the neanderthals.
It’s just a reality that people have to work for a living and aren’t home to watch daytime tv anymore. I never watched either show, but it’s still sad for fans.
more people walk out of a cinema disappointed , then people who just watched a soap episode.
Benjamin …. what reason would you have for wanting those shows that many people still enjoy and that employ hundreds and hundreds of people cancelled. Why would you take any pleasure in that?
What do you think they should be replaced with?
Daytime soaps are just Bad Televison! Admittedly thought I was hooked on Passions….this soap was so bad it was good!!! lol!!!!
Benjamin , your favourite must be The Bold and The Beautiful.
Sunset Beach aired on Channel Ten first , then FOX SOAP/ TALK , then on FOX8.
After reaching the final episode they went back 6 months and re screened final 6 months in double episodes on Fox8 early weekday mornings
Ten screened some of Sunset Beach but it was Fox 8 who stuck with it to the bitter end
Did Sunset Beach air in Australia? All episodes? Which network aired it here?
It is a sad reflection of daytime history.
But sadly in todays world networks are all about cheap shows, not quality shows.
In a way I blame the writers of these shows, daytime soaps are not like what they were in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s when there were good qaulity captivating storylines.
Now days they are full of young cheap crappy actors and outrageous boring storylines.
When Oprah finishes up on Ten, Ten should put the Young and the Restless back on Free To Air daytime, it is a much better quality soap than the others. Or even better idea by Days Of Our Lives from 9 and go back to the good old days of Days and YR back to back!!
Can’t wait for the cancelations of GH, DooL & Y&R soon!
In Australia , the most annoying thing is we never get to see the natural end. except for Sunset Beach and Another World.
The real final episode of Santa Barbara , Passions , All My Children , One Life to Live. We just have to leave it incomplete forever.
Is there any point even asking if Y&R can return to 9/Go/Gem????
I miss Passions.
One Life to Live was on FOX8 in Januray 1996 . Foxtel ran AMC , OLTL , Another World and Loving .That was the line up when Foxtel launched !!
Foxtel did not have GH because Channel Ten did at that time….
looking forward to the cancellations of The Chew and The Revolution.
That’s a shocker.
can we get The Chew here please
This is such a travesty and a sad reflection of our times. People have no regard for tradition or family anymore. They just want to see housewives screaming at each other and skanky kids in hot tubs. Sad.
I did love the bat-S**T crazy Passions back in the day, but “The Chew”? That’s the best name they could come up with?
Well they have had a good run i think both of those shows air on the 7 Network, or used to air. I think they have done an amazing job to stay in it for so long, considering the ever changing Tv landscape. I think the rest will fall in about 2 or 3 years max, the dominos have been falling and will contintue to fall.
