Extra live AFL, NRL.

Some good news for sports fans with live ANZAC Day AFL, and in Melbourne this weekend even live NRL.

Some good news for sports fans with some one-off live AFL and in Melbourne even live NRL.

The ANZAC Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood will air live on ONE and TEN from 2pm AEST (Melb / Ade / Per). There is also a special pre-game program  ANZAC Day From The MCG from 12pm AEST.

Wallaby legend, journalist and author Peter FitzSimons will join Tim Lane at the MCG as they bring the special Anzac Day service live to viewers, paying tribute to the sacrifice of the servicemen and women of Australia.

Marking the 70 anniversary of the siege of Tobruk, Network Ten’s coverage will feature interviews with three of the surviving “Rats”, Robert Semple, Ron Williamson and Basil Hayler.

AFL expert commentator and former Essendon captain Matthew Lloyd, who has played in numerous Anzac Day matches, will share his insights into what the day represents for the players.

Peter FitzSimons remarked of the 2008 game that he had: “…rarely seen something so impressive in the world of sport. As they played the Last Post and the national anthem, the 100,000-strong crowd uttered not a peep, whispered not a murmur.

“The atmosphere was electric and the general mood in the air one of reverence for the diggers and anticipation of the game to come…Somewhere, someone has done a superb job organising that landmark day in Australian sport.”

ANZAC Day From The MCG will be followed at 2.00pm by the annual Anzac Day clash between Essendon and Collingwood, which has become one of Australia’s biggest national sporting events and boasts the AFL Anzac Medal which is awarded to the best-on-ground player who best exemplifies the Anzac Spirit – skill, courage, self-sacrifice, teamwork and fair play.

A postgame wrap-up will be broadcast from 5.30pm live and exclusively on ONE. Hosted by Stephen Quartermain, Luke Darcy and Matthew Lloyd, they will review the Anzac Day clash which will include interviews with coaches, players and access to the press conferences.

  1. The fact that Ten and One are showing the build-up to the traditional Essendon/Collingwood Anzac Day game means that the Stawell Gift has been shafted.

  2. Bogues, One Game. What about the 13 years of Staying up till 2am watching the storm game which was more than 4 hours delayed. Or getting home after the game and waiting two hours before the replay.

Sorry but Channel Nein here in Melbourne and David Gallop and NRL are a disgrace show comtempt of Coverage Down her.

  3. Excellent. Will watch as usuall. This is exactly why ONE HD should stay because of the time difference. As for the NRL coverage in Adelaide, it would be great however Adelaide does not have a team not since the end of the Adelaide Rams back mid to late 90s. If and when the NRL decide to invest in the game in Adelaide and set up a NRL team in Adelaide then a FTA Network will choose to broadcast it at a proper time and even then it depends on the support from the locals. For the NRL to have national coverage at a decent time then there has to be a team in a particular city and that city needs to support that team, otherwise there will be no live matches into Adelaide. The city does not have a big enough supporter base to justify broadcasting the game live or even on delay at a reasonable time.

  4. Yeah, let me know when we get live NRL in Adelaide. My teams playing again tonight but stuff staying up until 3am to watch it on Nine. I’ll still watch it live though

  5. The only reason the Penrith-Melbourne NRL game is live into Melbourne (and I assume the rest of Victoria as well) is because Seven is showing the AFL game between Gold Coast and Melbourne (on delay due to V8 Supercars from NZ). Given the Suns are on the bottom of the ladder and the Demons don’t have many star players, you can imagine how many people will be watching that game.

  6. Shelley, of course we will be getting Essendon v Collingwood too. Live on Ten
( & probably live via ONE HD as well considering it’s live on ONE in Melb/Ade/Per).

  7. ..meanwhile we in Sydney still get screwed over by ch9

    3pm, Million Dollar Drop
4pm, NRL: Penrith vs Melbourne (delayed)

if ch9 were smart they would switch this around so we would get the NRL game live also.

  8. The AFL version has been live into Sydney for years now but good to see Ch9 showing a bit faith in the Rugby League by showing it live into Melbourne as Live NRL down south is very rare indeed.

  9. Melbourne finally gets one live NRL game. What do us NRL states get? The game on delay. How is that fair? If it was live, Nine don’t get to stuff as many adverts into the show.

I guess I should be thankful that it is on FTA.

  10. i love this game. best game of the home and away season by a country mile. it’s a shame they have to put 4 dribbler in the commentary team. lane, quaters, maher and darcy
