It was more than a game as AFL Footy Show‘s three wise monkeys Sam Newman, Eddie McGuire and Trevor Marmalade reunited on air last night for the show’s 500th episode.
The three original cast members sat side by side in a segment that looked back on some of the earliest days, most of which involved bad hair-dos and live telly trainwreck moments. But that has been part of the show’s appeal to the audience.
Newman has remained with the show since its start 18 years ago, while McGuire left in 2005 and Marmalade in 2008.
The show was a mix of old and new. An interview between Sam Newman and Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett was uncomfortable viewing even if it didn’t deliver a watercooler moment.
And just as the show has always done, it broke sports news with more on Ricky Nixon’s woes.
But should Eddie and Trevor rejoin the Footy Show?

Wasn’t Trev more pushed aside than rather him himself stepping aside?
Nice to see Dermott & Doug back on the show last night.
Trev yes, Ed no. As simple as that.
I actually think the show is slightly better now then when Eddie everywhere was there. I would much rather Trevor return. i also like when they had a animation segment which they stopped soon after the turn of the century, i think it was around 2002 may have been sooner. Those made me laugh.
Newman should retire; his shtick was dated eighteen years ago
stupid me for allowing to record to 11:45pm, it run over that so i miss the ending
AFL Footy Show‘s three wise monkeys? You’ve used the term ‘wise’ very loosely? 😛
Eddie can stay away, but I think Trev should come back.
I don’t think they should have let Trevor Marmalade go. I definitely wouldn’t like to see Eddie come back but Trevor’s one-liners from behind the bar were always good for a laugh. They seem to rely on Shane Crawford for the humour these days but he’s not in Marmalade’s class.
Trevor was just awful last night … the jokes fell flat and they took forever to get the puch line. I turned it over and watched graham norton’s interview with joan rivers (much funnier) and even when i finished watching that i turned it back and trevor was still going with the same gag !!
Answer: God yes, Eddie has a better grasp of how to control Sam.
I guess he thought his spot on the Today Show, an episode of Hot Seat and Million Dollar Drop wasn’t enough exposure for the day!
Wasn’t a bad show I thought! The Newman vs Kennett interview was quite good, especially amusing seeing Craig Hutchison sheepishly hiding in the wings when confronted by Kennett. Great to see Eddie back – it is really his forte, more so than Garry and Jimmy. Eddie is professional and articulate.
Also a great treat having Trevor back. Great looking back at his classic one-liners, but methinks he has just slowed a little too much now. Some of his gags last night were drawn out – to the point of making Sam’s interview look more entertaining. Maybe that was deliberate?
The production values were woeful last night. Bad camera angles, bad audio, bad 80’s wipes and fades. Not sure what all that was about. But you have to love live TV and all it brings.
Well done Footy Show. You have survived and entertained!!
Eddie has moved on and above his role on the footy show, although i believe that Trevor Marmalade back behind the bar would be a welcome return
Marmalade should. It was his one liners that made the show. Like last night “I’ve been busy doing some shows for the Queensland Disaster……….the gold coast suns”
