TV rights dispute shuts out Indian Premier League

The Indian Premier League is due to get underway on Friday but it won't be screening on TEN due to a dispute over TV rights.

The Indian Premier League is due to get underway on Friday but it won’t be screening on TEN due to a dispute over TV rights.

In March a consortium of Times Internet Limited and Nimbus Communication Limited acquired the global TV rights from The Board of Control for Cricket for broadcast outside India for the next 4 years. But it followed an earlier and unresolved dispute between the World Sport Group and the BCCI which cancelled an earlier media license.

WSG had the IPL rights in partnership with Sony Corporation.

A TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight, “As there is currently a significant legal dispute between The Board of Control for Cricket in India (which owns and controls the commercial rights in the Indian Premier League) and the company through which Network TEN secured the Australian broadcast rights, Network TEN has decided not to broadcast the IPL.

“As this matter is currently before the Court in India we will not be making any further comments at this time.”

FOX Sports is also unable to come to the aid of IPL cricket fans whilst TEN remains the rights holder.

  1. All our Indian fans should stop blamming channel 10 for no IPL on TV. The reason it isn’t on is because of typical ‘legal corporate disputes’ that seem all too common in India when it comes to cricket. Channel 10 bought the IPL rights off WSG who previously had a 10 year broadcast deal. This deal has since been taken off WSG and given to Nimbus thanks to Sony Max. What do you want Channel 10 to do? Pay more money for the rights or broadcast something illegally when they are in their right to receive compensation and a refund on the rights for the next 6 years?

Our indian friends living in Australia aren’t the ‘Victims’ in this one, the problem stems from the typical unorganized chaos that goes on in your homeland.

  2. Gutted, the best cricketers in the world, fanatically packed stadiums, millions up for grabs all rolled into a make or break pressure packed 3hrs.
Best TV going….multicultural audience …..but oh no its not on….only in Australia hey!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I have given up on Australian television to provide cricket. Just look at the epic fail which was Channel 9’s coverage of the World Cup. (only showing a couple of games here and there, and then usually either delayed, or more frequently, only half the game. Disgusting!

So I watch it online. http://www.crictimes.com is the sh*t. 😀

  4. Guys, all the comments are touching!

But what really means is Internet is booming and free to air is loosing.

In India BCCI stands for is – Board of Commerce for Corruption in India!

  5. What a disappointment I missed IPL last season, working up North with no One coverage, have been saddend by the lack of quality and relevant sport on One since returning at Christmas. Now I find no coverage of one of best competitions that wasn’t in the Pay TV pocket or the delayed to sleep Free TV programming.
Once Australia was the leading light in sport broadcasting but now it’s slowly turning into an irrelevent behemoth broadcasting paltry, sleep aiding “Reality Shows”.
Please wake up to yourselves, don’t continue to show the final Match of the Grand Slams or delayed coverage of nearly everything, get back to what made Aussie TV great. Get some national pride, show talented sports people LIVE and stop pandering to Accountants spendthrift advice.

  6. 1 hd sucks big time………………………. very sad , very very sad……they can still try. this wss the only thing i watched in 1 hd …my kids used to love it , we r very dissapointed……… no 1 veiwing for us any more….. i m sure no one wants to watch their rubbish shows.

  7. Was really looking forward to this tournament. Just watch Warnie on the live streaming and it was a fantastic game. Can’t believe that quality sport such as this is not broadcast to millions of fans in Australia.

  8. Terribly disappointed that One HD is not covering the IPL. Missed out on the world cup now this…….disgusting…..No cricket coverage in Australia….

  9. Another bad thing re ONE HD or TEN not showing the IPL is that this may very well be the last time we see Shane Warne and some other Aussies as well.He got 2-21 in last nights match , im sure there will be some great games , can we at least be shown the bloody knockout stages and final.

  10. @Brian , aok mate, its confusing whats what and what will be , i wouldnt bet the house on the primary channels going back to HD but. All we need is for them to say we are all having another channel , the bandwidth cant cope and we are on the outdated MPEG2 system.MPEG4 may come later if they need multiple HD but alot will have to upgrade there tvs , including me as it accepts only MPEG2 broadcasts , but i can always slap a New HD Topbox on , that would work.Roll on 2013.

  11. This is terrible. The IPL cricket is really exciting to watch. Its tragic that they cannot show it. It was only show on 1HD that I watched (other than ALF on the odd occasion). Not Fair to Cricket Fans. I bet they didn’t really try THAT hard.

  12. Disappointing…I only watch ONE when the IPL’s on. The rest of its programming seems to be a mix of sports of little interest and sports of no interest at all.

  13. I was looking forward to it. Its sad. Will look to internet if something is on. Heard ITV4 in UK is showing free to air and online. Feed must be of decent quality.

  14. Sorry Col your right in terms of muli-channelling
10 HD was shown on channel one.

7 used to broadcast in HD on 70 but now its a SD channel while 73 became HD.

Will the networks at any point update there primary channels to broadcast in HD?
