60 Minutes: May 22

On this Sunday's 60 Minutes, Liz Hayes has a story on the horrendous Westboro Baptist Church from the US.

Uh oh. On this Sunday’s 60 Minutes, Liz Hayes has a story on the horrendous Westboro Baptist Church from the US.

Expect talkback radio to fire up over this one.

Do not attempt this at home.

Broken Hearts
Who could forget that smile? Or the amazing tale of bravery that went with it? Alisa Camplin stole our hearts when she won gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Only later did we discover that she did it with two fractured ankles. But Alisa knows that broken bones are nothing. In March, her son Finnan, was born with congenital heart disease. His fight to beat his illness was as inspiring and heroic as any of his mother’s achievements.

Pure Hate
Right now, on the other side of the world, there is a bunch of people who hate you and we mean absolutely despise you. But don’t worry; they hate everyone else in Australia. The folk of the Westboro Baptist Church hate us so much that they actually rejoice in our suffering. The tragic bushfires of 2009? This year’s devastating floods? Apparently, we deserved it all. And the US Supreme Court lets them say it and more. Under Freedom of Speech, these so-called Christians can damn us all to Hell and right at the front of the queue, is that wayward Liz Hayes.

Without A Trace
It’s a rite of passage for many young Australians. Every year, thousands pack their bags and set off on working holidays overseas. They want an adventure and often they take risks that perhaps they shouldn’t. Usually, they come home in one piece, all the wiser for the experience. But 24-year-old Owen Rooney didn’t make it back. And no one knows why. He vanished somewhere in the wilds of Canada, and the tiny town where he was last seen isn’t giving up its secrets.
Reporter: Michael Usher
Producer: Danny Keens

It airs 7:30pm Sunday on Nine.

  1. i am so sorry for missing out the documentary tonight, i really wanted to watch it. no man should judge about anything, he or she should know better if they are a real christian.

  2. So sad to think that people who call themselves Christians, have misused the Bible. Did not hear one mention of the truth, that God loves mankind so much, He send His Son to pay the price of all our weaknesses and sins! Hopefully there will a story that gives the opportunity for true believers to speak the truth…and from the same Bible these people are using!!!

  3. I really hope none of those kids turn out to be homosexual, because those people will do horrible things to them. their own family no less.

  4. Seriously 60 Minutes, surely there was a better story than that? Why bother interviewing a group of complete crackpots. I score 0/10 for that story. That belonged on the 5.30 time slot.

  5. i think those w*nkers are just jealous that they have such a misreble life that they have to make it their job to do the same to everyone else why give them the time of day and seriously how long before something bad happens to them that they will need help and it could be that the Dr or whatever helps them is gay. can’t wait for the look on their faces when it happens…

  6. its two much too bare! lets show theez westboro morrons that their a waist of space by checking our words, spelling and apostrophes before posting.

  7. The time will come ‘ for those who judge with hatred, will be judged and condemed from eternal life, for spreading hatred through out my land’ – God Bless Australia ! Cheers !

  8. It’s not just America, we have them too. A couple of years ago, there was one outside Melbourne Central station telling everyone the end of the world was coming.

America just has a larger population, so they have more of them.

  9. America is full of these crackpot idiots who dont know or dont want to know reality. They should be driven out of business one way or the other, i wonder whether the american people understand what damage these morrons are causing to their country which is already tainted.

  10. I’m torn on the West Baptist story.
Should I ignore it, or should I be aware of what my “enemies” are up to ?
I always try and avoid hate in my life, but sometimes you need to be vigilant.
    A dilemma indeed

  11. Why even give them airspace? They are mean spirited and brainwash their infant children into the same mean spirited belief system. I could watch this but I think I’ve seen it all before…Louis Theroux et al. No matter how many times someone questions their actions or their belief…these people only know one message. Hate. I know that the US is big on freedom of speech but these people should be held accountable for their actions. Don’t be fooled however. They know their stuff and worse still picket and do what they do within the confines of the law – so they can get away with “gods” message and slip out of any prosecution. I can’t imagine what Liz Hayes will bring to the report? Nothing new except perhaps illustrating to the masses that out there there are still people who hide behind the bible and preach hate and intolerance in the name of christianity.

  12. I will record this to watch the Alisa Camplin story. It was such a tragedy for her and her husband when they lost there son. Its weird that we go from this tragic story and someone who deserves to be a mother to the next story about these moronic americans who brain wash there kids with rubbish.

This bapist church is made up of morons who have no idea about our country and would probably never leave there country to travel anywhere. When Heath Ledger died and they celebrated because he did Brokeback Mountain did anyone think to point out to them that Heath was just playing a character. I saw the preview for it and poor Liz had signs up about her going to hell. What did Liz do.

  13. Must see this, that westboro baptist church is a horrible cult, they’ve distorted the Bible so much and seem to completely misunderstand the gospel of grace that Jesus taught.

  14. lol, i saw a documentary with them by louis theroux. their leader is an angry, bitter old man with an extremely short fuse. no idea what exactly it is that he’s angry about, as he only spoke to louis for about 2 minutes, just to tell him what a despicable human being he thought louis was (no irony there…), but for some reason, the members of his cult follow his every word.
