Ooops. Treasurer’s mishap ripe for political puns

On Monday Media Watch said the press love a good pun at the expense of politicians. Enter Wayne Swan on Thursday.....

Treasurer Wayne Swan had a mishap when doing a radio interview on the ABC, when he appeared to misplace a glass of water.

The glass smashed on the floor (which, to radio listeners might have sounded like somebody threw something). Political interviews on ABC Radio are often filmed for ABC News Breakfast too.

But in politics, it is already now rising above anything he said in the interview as its own break-out moment.

Print media are already describing it as “Swan ‘cracks’ under budget pressure,” “Wayne Swan just can’t hold his drink and smashes glass during interview” and ABC News Breakfast suggested he was, “a little broken.”

On Monday night Media Watch made some pointed commentary, drawn from Lindsay Tanner’s book, about how media are less interested in content (policy) and more interested in style (Julia’s hair, Tony’s speedos). Press conferences set against sexed-up backdrops find themselves the basis of journo puns and a clever editor.

So here’s a few more for free….Swan’s slippery fingers, butter fingers, glassy stare, smashing the figures.

  2. This pick-up is typical of you, David!
Your right-wing, biased, rednecked attack on the government reeks of the lack of balance you and your other Bolt-loving buddies bring to the media 😉
    Kidding of course.
