Spicks and Specks to end in November

After seven years beloved ABC music quiz show Spicks and Specks will come to an end in November.

After seven years, ABC’s beloved music quiz show Spicks and Specks has announced it will fold in November.

The ABC says host Adam Hills, and team captains Myf Warhurst and Alan Brough decided to call it a day.

“I have loved every second of my involvement with Spicks and Specks, and especially working with Alan and Myf. We always said we wanted to leave when we were on top and while we were still having fun, and now feels like the right time,” says Adam Hills.

“We are indebted to our loyal fans for giving us seven amazing years on Australian television, and I hope they’ll hold the memories of Spicks and Specks close to their hearts.”

Myf Warhurst says, “It’s been a wonderful privilege to be part of Spicks and Specks. I’ve worked with an incredible team of people, both on and off screen, and miraculously, managed to keep a job on TV for seven years, on a show that people love.

“I’ve been lucky enough to experience many great things. I’ve seen Frank Woodley’s privates, been naked under a desk with Pete Murray, and met many of my childhood musical crushes. Life can’t get much better than that, so this seems like the perfect time to wind things up.”

Alan Brough added, “For seven years I’ve had a job where I’ve met Gourd Orchestras, Oompah bands and Status Quo. Very few people can say that.”

“I’d rather people were upset because we stopped a little early, than upset because we stayed far too long.”

Across its 277 episodes the show has featured more than 150 special guests and attracted bumper ratings for the ABC, frequently topping some of the offerings of commercial television. The show has also picked up AFI Awards and this year a Logie  for Most Outstanding Light Entertainment Program.

With an average weekly audience of 1.35 million viewers it has been among ABC1’s top 10 programs each year from 2006-2010. The panel-based format has also inspired many copycat panel shows, most of which have failed after a few episodes.

Amanda Duthie, ABC TV Head of Arts & Entertainment says, “Spicks and Specks is more than just a quiz show. It’s got joy at its heart, and for that reason it attracts three generations of viewers.

“I think its appeal comes from the mix of funny, friendly and clever people in front and behind the camera, having a good time, and making a show about the thing that touches all of our lives – music.”

Gold Logie nominee Adam Hills is planning another series of Adam Hills in Gordon St Tonight, and the ABC indicates it is discussing seperate projects for Myf Warhurst and Alan Brough.

The show will end with a one-hour finale to screen on Wednesday November 23 at 8.30pm on ABC1.

  1. I got sick of this show a while back as it has the same guests on and was getting a rather tad stale with the questions, theme shows etc. Nothing lasts forever, I like Rockwiz better it is my intellectual with the questions and has proper scoring! I hope they keep In Gordon Street Tonight that was a rather good show by Adam Hill.

I bet you 7 will reinvent the White Room!

  2. Yup, will be a sad day but as a fan, I think it is time to call it quits with dignity. Now how’s about a fully-fledged Aussie version of Never Mind the Buzzcocks?

  3. Very sad news, but all good things must come to an end, I guess.

@T-Mac. I agree. better to go out while it’s still loved and rating well rather than outstaying its welcome, like Rove or Hey Hey.

@Not Happy Sam – “I wonder how many of the Spicks & Specks viewers also watch Rockwiz”.

    *raises hand*

  4. About time, this show was so boring, boring set and boring host.
I have not watched it in years, instead, I have been watching RockWiz, so much better.
But, some people prefer the Rockwiz stylel and others prefer Spicks & Specks.

I wonder how many of the Spicks & Specks viewers also watch Rockwiz.

  5. I was watching a repeat yesterday and trying to remember how long the show had been going, and my very next thought was it was the sort of show that could go for years and years and years…

    Damn, I will miss it.

  6. Well there’s a bet I won!

AHIGST was a tester for a new vehicle for Adam Hills given S&S being rather long in the tooth.

I said to the wife before this season begun: If the set is unchanged, this is the last season. If they have a new set, they have a few more seasons in them.

Sure enough, same old tired set. And now it’s official.

  7. I guess nothing lasts forever, been great guys. The show is among the last of the truly entertaining shows left on TV…be real sad to see the show end.

  8. It was getting past it. It seemed like over half the show was anecdotes, and precious little was music quiz.

Now’s the perfect time to invent a new nerdy panel show that isn’t The White Room.

  9. Seven, Nine and TEN executives are all in sync jumping for joy at this News i bet. With The Chaser gone and now this, the ABC may not take away too much of the pie for much longer on Wednesday nights.

I wonder if Myf is in talks with TEN? I am always coming to that conclusion whenever someone sits at the panel at 7pm project more than once, which she has

  10. Oh great….Can We Help…on the way out and now Spics and Specks…
    Also Lie to Me…..
Seems the only show you can count on still being there…is the news….*sigh*
