Airdate: A Gurl’s World

Nine's newest kid's series has an international backdrop, set in Australia, Singapore and Germany.

Nine’s newest kid’s series a gURLs wURLd begins next month and it already has an international backdrop.

Produced by Southern Star Entertainment, in conjunction with Southern Star Singapore and TV Plus for North German Radio and Television, the episodes are set in Australia, Singapore and Germany.

The series is directed by Ralph Strasser, (Blue Water High, Snobs), and written by John Armstrong.

It follows the adventures of three best friends who, after a year of living in Singapore, are separated when Ally (Marny Kennedy, AFI Best Young Actress award winner) returns to Australia, Emma (Sophie Karbjinski) goes home to Germany and Jackie (Charlotte Nicdao) is left alone in Singapore.

With the girls devastated at the prospect of leaving each other, Jackie’s brother decides to give them each a parting gift – a USB which enables them to have their own private chat room. But the present turns out to be a lot more than that. With the help of this special gift and their mobile phones Emma, Ally and Jackie are able to transport themselves into cyber space – and even travel between each other’s homes.

Each episode will put these fun-loving, intelligent and daring girls on a crazy adventure in Singapore, Germany or Australia. It’s not all fun and games though as their exploits in cyber space also prove to be dangerous. The risk of being stuck on the wrong side of the world, or never being able to return home from cyber space, constantly looms over their heads. What will happen if their laptops are turned off? Or their mobile phone batteries go flat? And, although they swear to keep their chat room a secret, what if someone else finds out?

It premieres on Saturday, July 2, at 1.30pm.

  1. I reckon more people would watch programs like this, if it were slotted at 4pm, instead of stuff like Kitchen Whiz and Pyramid. 1:30pm Saturday? I’d expect some of the target audience to be out playing sport…

Timeslots for C dramas on commercial networks, has been a talking point on this site since this time last year, when the second series of Lochie Leonard premiered on Nine.

  2. This morning Channel Ten began season two of The Elephant Princess (Saturdays 9.30am) without any promos or publicity. Another quality show that nobody knows about. No respect. Yet they still run all these promos for the woeful Me and My Monsters suggesting they are ‘new’ when they are actually repeats. They really ned to get their act together.

  3. These Australian produced children’s shows get sold to so many countries overseas, but so often the Australian networks don’t give them decent or consistent timeslots in Australia these days. They need to do better.

  4. The timeslot sucks.I mean who is home on a Saturday at that hour on a Saturday apart from under 15’s.They should go back to at least a Thursday or Friday around 4:30pm even if it means losing half a news bulletin.Won’t somebody please think of the children.
