Australia’s Got Talent comic falls flat without “copy and paste” gags

Updated: Comedian Jordan Paris is yet again accused of plagiarism, this time in his return appearance in which he admitted to lifting gags.

Wearing an ‘As Seen on Today Tonight‘ t-shirt, Gold Coast comedian Jordan Paris returned to Australia’s Got Talent last night after media headlines that accused him of plagiarism.

But without sourced material, he performed an awkward routine that mocked his last appearance.

“I just sacked my two writers, copy and paste,” he said.

“One of the jokes I used was from Lee Mack.

“It took the US 10 years to find Osama bin Laden but it only took Australia 10 minutes to find out I’m not Lee Mack. Now if I want to do comedy I’ll have to move to Pakistan.”

During his routine both Brian McFadden and Danni Minogue pressed the X button, before he finished by singing the Bee Gees classic “I Started a Joke.”

“I was coming back to take the mickey, show people I’m not afraid to have a joke about myself,” he told host Grant Denyer.

But the judges said his act was uncomfortable. Sandilands even suggested he was better off sticking to other people’s material.

“I don’t care if you ripped off other people’s jokes, you delivered them well,” he said.

Proceeding to the next round of the contest were singer Liam Burrows, dance act Instant Bun and comedian Old Fella.

UPDATED: This story just gets worse. Now Paris is accused of lifting material in his return appearance last night.

“I just sacked my two writers – copy and paste,” he told the audience.

But Brisbane Times says even that joke has also been used before. At the Comedy Central’s Roast of Joan Rivers in 2009 comedian Jeffrey Ross sledged Everybody Loves Raymond comedian Brad Garrett by saying: “This guy has two writers, their names are cut and paste.”

  1. the shows credit has been ruined by letting he perform. He took a spot of someone who actually had talent by stealing an entire act. They should of banned him, but 7 love a bit of hype and hanging people to dry

  2. I can’t believe people are trying to excuse this thief. ‘Jack!’ says ‘I don’t care what the “conventions” are in comedy circles’. Yeah? Maybe I should come round to your house and steal all your property because, after all, who cares about ‘conventions’? Maybe I could just copy out ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and release it as my own book because who cares about all those boring ‘conventions’ in literary circles? Doing your own work and not stealing from others is not a ‘convention’ – it’s standard practice, isn’t it? Unless your job is being a burglar.

  3. He’s just an attention-seeking fame wh*re. Wasn’t he on Australian Idol multiple times? Before coming to this show, not singing, but completely ripping off a comedy routine from other people who actually *are* talented. Then of course, the ‘as seen on Today Tonight’ shirt.

  4. I loved him the first time, I couldn’t care less what the “conventions” are in Comedy circles, he was great and the media stir that came from this “story” was just publicity for the show. He didn’t stand any sort of fare chance with all the negative atmosphere that was created by Grant’s intro, and the negative publicity, it had a massive impact on the audience, as did Brian and Danni hitting their X.
His jokes were good, his delivery suffered because of the inappropriate atmosphere and the excess of nerves the whole incident caused him … in a different environment he would have gone down brilliantly! Loved what he did with the TShirt and the song at the end …

  5. He should have left the making fun of himself gag at the t-shirt and nothing more. He should have done something totally different, not highlight why everyone thought he was a fake.

agreed with Adam of Brisbane, excellent comedians around in pubs, like Dockside in Brisbane, where I first saw Josh Thomas! 🙂

  6. He was not dreadful. The program should be renamed “Australia’s Got Popularity”. It’s become a popularity contest, not a talent contest.
It’s come down to who is the most popular, in attracting those 55 cent votes, rather than judges judging who has “talent”. But somewhat better quality judges than the present three.
You wouldn’t compare this guy to Ben ? the voice-impersonator, who actually does have quite some talent.

  7. I give him credit for getting back on stage and doing another performance but it really wasnt funny. Poor Danni in the end couldnt even watch.

The funniest comedian they have had on there was Ben because he could do any voice of a character.

  8. Yes, he was pretty poor, his delivery was non existant.

But some of the other acts were pretty bad as well.

The big group just sounded like a group of people singing, it was nothing special.
But the (so called) judges kept praising them.

The Rap singer… Well both my wife and I could not understand 90% of what he was actualy saying, it was very hard to understand the words.
But again, the judges say he was fantastic.

The other acts were pretty good.

    1. All I do? That’s a bit rich in itself BillyBob.

The site certainly has a mix of original stories (interviews, features, reviews, news and stories that are regularly ‘broken’ here before wider media) and stories that are aggregated, all of which are clearly sourced. You’ve also failed to acknowledge the quantity of stories I output everyday of the week. For a personal blog I am comfortable that I am delivering a mix of stories that are original as well as my reaction to other articles.

The problem for Jordan, and it wasn’t a criticism I initiated, was that the convention in comedy is that you don’t do somebody else’s material and mislead the audience into believing it is your own. This differs from singers, where it is more obvious when a song is not original. I agree that magicians seem to get away with performing somebody else’s tricks without complaint. I’m not sure I buy your analogy where I clearly reference original sources with regularity as well as embellish the content with opinion. And it was Jordan himself who called his writers “copy and paste,” if you watched the show last night.

  9. He had a real talent with his delivery the first time, which is where the important talent is. Perhaps Kyle was right, because last night his material and his delivery were bad.

  10. I gotta say I did like his “As Seen on Today Tonight” shirt.

Also, I agree with David @ Green Point… Ive heard a few of Old Fella’s jokes before, at least one of which was on Kochie’s Joke of the Day a couple of months back.

  11. I dont understand how the same show where he is a contestant on kept talking about it. By doing what they did they gave him no chance of winning.
