Secret Sunrise plan: Kochie + Mel + ?

Sunrise has proposed adding a permanent third host to the breakfast show, according to media reports today.

Sunrise Executive Producer Michael Pell has proposed adding a permanent third host to the Seven breakfast show, according to media reports today.

The Australian reports Seven chief executive David Leckie and news chief Peter Meakin have not yet accepted the ‘secret strategy’ fearing it is too radical.

There are no indications if the plan was to feature a current member of the Sunrise family, such as Natalie Barr.

The proposal comes at a time when Sunrise‘s ratings have taken a hit, especially in the Sydney market.

Two weeks ago the show lost the week to Today  by 4,000 viewers nationally. Last week it won with 352,000 to Nine’s 349,000 but still trailed in Sydney and Melbourne.

Both shows are also planning broadcasts from New York later this year.

Seven is believed to have commissioned audience research on the popularity of Mel and Kochie (just 10 votes split the rival teams in a recent TV Tonight poll, in Nine’s favour).

  1. Instead of adding a new host – why not remove the two (Mel and Koch) – With Mel’s $700,000 a year contract and Koch’s million I’m sure Channel 7 could re-invest that money and find some better talent and at the same time have some change left over… The stakeholders would Love that…

  2. I am not, and never have been, a ‘Melissa Doyle’ fan, she is so fake… and that laugh of hers just turns me off. The remote goes on Mute when Mel is on screen in this house.

Why does David get paid $300k more than Mel? Because David is not afraid to tell the viewers what Mel really thinks i.e. the stuff she says when not on camera. David has the guts to relay to us, as the audience, when Sunrise is back Live.

He made Mel look like a total idiot a couple of times last week, and she was ever so embarrassed when he repeated/quoted what Mel said when off screen/during the breaks.

Some truly Gold moments, so keep up the good work Kochie – keep telling us what really is on Mel’s mind.

  3. Can they stop referring to each other by nickname please! it may be OK in the pub, but please people have names. Dont watch it during the week, but weekends it truly is annoying.

  4. Their TV personas are transparently disingenuous. Kochie attempts to be the Aussie every man that women can associate with the men in their life and the male audience can identify with but he does it in such a clumsily calcuated way he’s just as likely to say “fair shake of the sauce bottle.” Take for instance any time there’s a segment involving fashion, make-up or anything of that nature and he’ll feign bloke-ish ignorance when you know he spends half an hour getting his make-up done every morning and would know the brand of his mascara, foundation, see a facialist and in all likelyhood is wearing one of William Shatners old girdles. I get the idea of Doyle, she’s unthreatening and mild, she’s white bread so her lack of opinion and personality hopefully annoys and offends as few people as possible. What the show needs is legitimate personality, not TV personality and genuine bantar. If the co-hosts have nothing to chat about they shouldn’t chat, they should be fired and their replacements should be tested like hell to find two people who legitimately get along and are enjoyable to watch together.

  5. The entire “Sunrise family” lack in personality. Pell over thinks everything. Think simple and you will get results but by judging on comments from this site and many others, it could be already too late.

  6. David, I have to say that the picture you chose for this story truly captures the essence of Sunrise – Kochie saying something lame and pointless, and Mel thinking “How the hell do I get us out of this one…?”

  7. I have some suggestions to make Sunrise a better show. One- Grant Denyer should be louder, funnier, and have access to a time machine. Two- whenever Grant is not on screen, all other characters should be asking ‘Where’s Grant?
