Southern Star boss: “I fired Peter Everett.”

Production company boss admits to sacking Peter Everett saying it was time to move on.

Southern Star Productions have responded to yesterday’s interview with former host of Ready Steady Cook, Peter Everett.

Chief Executive Officer Rory Callaghan said,  “I took the decision to move on in consultation with the network. I think we’d reached a point where we all needed to move on.”

Yesterday Everett told TV Tonight he was disappointed he was no longer fronting the show, and was told in a phone call just before he was heading overseas.

Ready Steady Cook is now hosted by Colin Lane, the show’s third host since 2005 but many viewers have expressed their support for Everett saying his personality defined the show.

  1. Ridiculous explanation. “don’t bother coming back from Bali.” I bet Pete must have had a great holiday after that. Where’s the tact? I’m done with channel ten and their constant bad decisions- get a grip Southern Star.

  2. It’s such a pleasure to see Colin just shaking hands with Chefs and players….

Now if he will just stay out of the way while the cooking is happening I will be
happy to go back to watching the show, as I love cooking shows. Joan

  3. hmmm I get the feeling there is more to this than meets the eye… why are the major players intent on fanning the flames on this one… obviously something has gone down and its fun watching this game of chicken that appears to be going on…..

  4. There’s two sides to every story. It’s a shame he didn’t elaborate further about how it was a “hard production”.

I found it really uncomfortable watching how touchy, feely he was with all the guests. His constant hugging and touching seemed really inappropriate to me.

I’m sure everyone will get over it pretty quickly. Move on people.

  5. Game man making that admission….’specially with soo much bad feeling about the dumping….out here in viewing land….
But as I said before…too late to shut the stable door…the horse has bolted…there is no going back…*sigh*
I am afraid I cannot watch though…have tried a number of times…and it does not gel…makes me uncomfortable…and I have to reach for the remote…

  6. The CEO shouldn’t be too comfrotable he might get a phone call soon from TEN saying “Don’t bother to try and sell your shows to us”.

  7. I thought Peter’s quote “I’d heard some gossip spread about myself. Some of it might have been true, some of it not so true.” was very telling.

  8. Their decision should be respected. They own the show and put up the money and there is never a easy way to sack someone. I am sure Colin will bring his own style to the show and attract his own support and in a few years they might again look for someone fresh. Nothing stays the same forever.

  9. Thanks David for following this story. Interesting to see Mr Callaghan’s response. I still think its wrong how Pete was fired by a phone call. I try watching with Colin but its really hard to watch.

  10. Why do Southern Star continue to think it is wise to change the hosts of their shows. Didn’t they learn from Gretel’s sacking? Maybe Gretel’s sacking was done by different people in different circumstances, I’m not too sure, but clearly the audience was not ready to move on from Everett so why the hell sacking.
They say it was ‘hard’ working with him, get over it! Bloody suck it up softies and deal with it and keep him on air.
That said, I personally don’t mind Colin Lane, but this whole saga just irritates me.

  11. Dumped before an overseas holiday? Southern Star must’ve learned from Amanda Duthie’s firing of Jeremy ‘Junglist’ Ray from Good Game…

  12. I found it hard to watch the show even in passing with Everett, for me his manner was condescending and unsettling (you could tell even the cooks were uncomfortable around him), definitely a good call in my opinion.

  13. Probably a bleeding obvious observation, but this Pete Everett shafting is another example of how brutal the tv industry is. I was largely sheltered from this during my life at the ABC, but egos, personalities, oftimes attempts to ‘reinvent the wheel’ by incumbent executives, often result in such personnel changes. They happen constantly, especially behind the scenes, and in the same futile way a show is axed after two or three eps, a successful host after several years is suddenly discarded, and with such little respect or reason. Mr Callaghan, i have observed previously, and his response to all of this doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.

  14. Geez

It all sounds very cold and blunt if you ask me, although i guess that’s the game. Sometimes people forget to kiss the ground their CEOs walk on and that’s what happens. He’ll do well regardless anyway
