ABC2 replays Friday Night Lights

ABC2 is set to give one of the most acclaimed dramas in the US another Free to Air shot on Australian televison.

It’s one of the most acclaimed dramas in the US, yet when it aired previously on TEN HD it never really attracted much attention. It subsequently played on Pay TV.

Now ABC2 is set to give Friday Night Lights another Free to Air shot.

More than just a drama about a football team, this series was awarded a Peabody Award, a Humanitas Prize, and a Television Critics Association Award, Writers Guild of America Award as well as several technical Emmy Awards.

ABC2 begins the series from S1E1.

In the town of Dillon, Texas, football is life, and no one knows that better than new head coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler). Pressure mounts as the Dillon Panthers, led by star quarterback Jason Street (Scott Porter), enter pre season surrounded by a swirl of press, recruiters, and state championship-sized expectations.

Backup quarterback Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) prepares to ride the bench in the shadow of Jason Street, as running back Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch) struggles with a serious vice.

As the season opener grows near, the town of Dillon is focused on what they believe to be most important, winning.

It begins 8:30pm Friday 29 July 20 on ABC2.

  1. APM, you’re entitled to your view but I think a lot of viewers, and especially the networks, would disagree. They want to diversify and try to catch viewers who might not watch their main channels.

  2. I’m with you, Jack. I don’t think being from the US should preclude it from being on the ABC. The more of the likes of The West Wing, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, etc on ABC2, the better, I reckon.

  3. because Jack, ABC used to be the home for British shows and I find it strange that 7two have such a large interest in them. the 3 main channels used to be the home for US shows. having a channel name like Abc2 or 7two should mean exactly that, more of the same from the main channel!!

  4. I wonder how long it’ll be till ABC2 plays Veronica Mars…

APM, why would you want ABC2 to be more like 7TWO? I’d rather quality US shows than UK repeats from the 90s and early 00s.

  5. OK I’ll watch it this time!
I absolutely hate sports and so didn’t even consider watching it before, but all your recommendations have convinced me to give it a go.
I also love ABC2 – great shows and no ads!
(Perfection would be no ugly watermark too)

  6. @Vinny that’s interesting I was wondering what TEN was going to do with seasons 4 and 5.

I still think its a shame that FNL wasn’t given more of a chance now with the digital channels. As its been said before it would go well on ONE.

Though well done to ABC2 for picking it up. And than ks David for reporting on this. Its just a really well acted show. I think its hard to put into words how good it is.

  7. good show and great timeslot. Ten have been showing Season 3 on Saturday Nights/Sunday mornings in some states. whats with ABC 2 airing all these american shows? they hardly ever do on the main channel so why on abc2? 7two is what ABC 2 should be, and vise versa. 7mate should be airing the show, they own Universal shows now so shouldn’t it go to them?

  8. This sounds like it’s in the same bucket as The Wire – a critical success in the US, doesn’t rate well on Aus commercial FTA, ABC2 then rebroadcast it a few years later, and I get to enjoy a great drama. I’ll def be checking it out.

  9. Love Friday Night Lights. Hopefully ABC2 will show the whole series. TEN ruined this by putting it on so late.

Still an amazing show and really looking forward to catching up with the seasons I’ve missed.
