Jack Vidgen wows with original song

At just 14 years old singer Jack Vidgen proves he doesn't just sing up a storm, he writes them too...

When 14 year old Jack Vidgen first appeared on Australia’s Got Talent he rightly received a lot of attention for his vocal skills, singing “I Have Nothing (If I Don’t Have You).”

Since then he has been considered the favourite to take out the title, buoyed by plenty of media stories, including on other Seven shows.

Sometimes the glow outshines the spark, but last night Vidgen stepped up to the plate not just delivering another impressive vocal performance, but doing it with his own composition.

The song “Yes I Am” showed talent beyond his 14 years, with a strong melodic hook, and several shifts of pace that perfectly suited a Grand Final performance. Even if this song had been embellished by a musical arranger, it was still one out of the box. Australia’s Got Talent may have actually uncovered a star in the making.

But as Susan Boyle (and several Australian Idol success stories) know, it ain’t over just yet.

Amongst an impressive array of acts last night were dance troupe Instant Bun and barbershop gents Benchmark.

Illusionist Cosentino was also one to watch, but while it isn’t a breach of the rule, he already has several years of experience under his belt.

In 2008 he performed on Mornings with Kerri-Anne when TV Tonight paid a visit to the show, with the KAKster even joining in the act.

Seven announces the winner of the show next week.

Update: Australia’s Got Talent neglected to clarify Jack Vidgen co-wrote ‘Yes I Am’

  1. I like Jack but I felt he had an unfair advantage over the others with his constant exposure in the spotlight. I agree he has talent but I don’t think I’d buy his album if he keeps singing female songs. Plus how can you compare him to justin bieber? At least justin bieber sings like what a boy should sound like.

  2. @Kev – the “vocal gymnastics” style has been around since the 80s with Whitney Houston and then Mariah Carey (who took it to a whole new level).

I, like others, am stunned that people are carrying on about Jack’s teeth! Why can’t we just embrace the fact that he’s a 14 year old kid with a hell of a lot of talent?!

  3. It is a talent contest…..which I do not watch….and realise I am in the minority…but I feel the teeth comments are just plain rude and disrespectful…..and must hurt a 14yr old child….not nice people.

  4. Not to be mean but I have to agree with the commenters below. The new teeth are a bit creepy but a couple of coffees and he’ll be normal again. But there’s something a tad odd about his voice. It’s very strong and pretty well controlled but some professional singers I know (opera types) think it’s nasal and forced. But who cares? Teenage & pre-teenage girls love him and any songs he releases will go ballistic, so good luck to you, young dude!
BTW, I don’t watch AGT, has Sandilands been into the KFC? He looks huge!

  5. Wow tall poppy syndrome has already arrived. The boy can sing (and apparently write songs too) so we now have people attacking his teeth!!!! Why can’t we just enjoy his obvious talent. I think he seems a really nice kid.

  6. I agree with the other comments. He can sing, no doubt, but it’s creepy listening to and watching a 14yo boy with fake teeth sound like a female soul singer.

  7. His teeth are distracting. Last night on twitter there were hundreds of tweets about his teeth and barely any about his voice. I guess his little stunt is working.

  8. Why, oh, why did this young boy go and get that whole mouthful of fake “US soapie star” teeth? He has lost his natural smile – and now looks like about 10 million American kids…The kid’s hugely talented so what is So wrong with a bit of natural star identity. Sad.

  9. Got to agree. I have been very impressed by his voice in his previous performances, but not the actual karaoke renditions (why did he try to copy Adele’s inflections and tone in ‘Set Fire To The Rain’?). Last night though, I thought his song was quite good, especially for a 14-year old; the chords were not too predictable and the changes in pacing was great. He is a great talent indeed.
