James Spader becomes CEO at The Office

NBC has confirmed that James Spader has joined the regular cast of The Office as its new CEO. Minor Spoilers.

Minor Spoilers: NBC has confirmed that James Spader has joined the regular cast of The Office as its new CEO.

He will join as CEO Robert California of Sabre, the parent company of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Co., replacing Kathy Bates.

Spader last appeared in the seventh season finale of The Office as one of several notable actors vying for Michael Scott’s regional manager position.

Paul Lieberstein, an executive producer and series regular, said, “James will reprise his role as Robert California, this uber-salesman that has a power to convince and manipulate, like a high-class weirdo Jedi warrior.

“He’ll have been hired over the summer as the new manager, but within hours, got himself promoted. Within days, he took over the company. James has an energy that is completely his own, and The Office has no tools for dealing with this guy.

“We’re thrilled he’s joining our cast.”

  1. I hope Catherine Tate isn’t hired- she’s so fabulous, I always want to see what she does next, don’t want to see her tied up in The Office.

  2. @Charlie Kelly I really hope that rumour’s not true! Tate helped ruin a season of Doctor Who, I’m not in the mood for her to ruin the rest of The Office. I probably wouldn’t watch if she came on board.

  3. Office Obsessive here – and dear god I hope the show isn’t dragged down even further then the last few seasons by Katherine Tate.

James Spader replaces Jo, Darryl or Andy (probably the former) takes over as regional manager of Dunder Miflin Scranton Branch

  4. I hope with James Spader being the new CEO of Sabre, that Jim Carey does get brought in as Regional Manager. There was that massive rumour about him earlier in season 7.

  5. How could someone say he was the least funny?

    He was brilliant.

Going on the Rumors that this seems to confirm, he’ll be a show regular but not the in office boss. That’ll probably still go to Catherine Tate.

So she’ll come in once he gets promoted. He’ll have a more active and regular role than Kathy Bates did.

I still maintain Carrel was the least consistent part of the office. They never got the balance right of a well meaning person who is ignorant and makes bad misguided decisions. With someone that’s completely stupid, yet brilliant when they need to be.

  6. I too will miss the genius of Steve Carell but Spader can play this unnerving dubious character in his sleep (great character name too). I cannot wait to see him in this.

He always performs so well… That’s what she said.

  7. Looking forward to Spader back on tele, of coarse if they give the manager to the ultra annoying Katherine Tate I won’t be watching the office!

  8. Good news, he was the best thing about the season finale. Now let’s hope this means that Catherine Tate won’t be allowed back anywhere near the show, for she was the worst thing.

  9. Best news ever!
I am going to miss Steve Carell but i think they did the best job any show has ever done in writing a major character out. You just felt his story had come full circle and you were happy to see him leave.

The inclusion of James Spader is great. Alan Shore is one of the greatest television characters of all time and if last years final is anything to go by Robert California is going to be just as strong.

Now all we need it for Catherine Tate to be hired and my Office wish list will be complete! Tate was said to have a schedule clash for the start of the new season so hopefully Robert California is simply keeping the seat warm for Nellie Bertram!
