Noni Hazlehurst: “Go the F*** to Sleep”

Actress Noni Hazlehurst drops plenty of expletives in a cheeky YouTube clip, which will probably see a few Play School mums reaching for their ear plugs.

Actress Noni Hazlehurst is clearly having a bit of fun in a YouTube clip that may send a few Play School mums reaching for their ear plugs.

She’s reading from the cheeky US storytime book “Go The F*** to Sleep.”

In the clip she drops plenty of expletives, all read with her charming, syrupy voice. And you gotta love that.

It follows on from a Samuel L. Jackson clip, reading the book written by Adam Mansbach.

She told Text Publishing that, “it’s impossible to understand this hilarious book’s appeal unless you’ve experienced the utter desperation of a parent whose child won’t sleep. Most of us suffer in silence, unwilling to admit our helplessness.

“Hopefully this will encourage parents to be honest about the problem, find solace in the fact that they’re not alone and start swapping ideas that might work.”

The clip is entirely independent and unrelated to ABC’s Play School.

But it’s pretty obvious her presentation style draws upon the Noni that we’ve come to love on the show, at a time when it is marking its 45th anniversary. She’s also been a champion of children’s television for years. But should that necessarily stop her from having a bit of fun?

Hazlehurst is a freelance actress, who hasn’t worked on Play School since 2003. Viewers have also seen her getting grisly on City Homicide. You have to be diverse to survive in this industry…..

The clip is sure to get people talking  -it’s already trending on Twitter. But that’s probably its point.

WARNING: Language. Big Time.

  1. Just went to watch and:

This video has been removed as a violation of YouTube’s policy on depiction of harmful activities.
    Sorry about that.

What the heck was in that video!

  2. WTF??? Youtube has taken it down!!

‘This video has been removed as a violation of Youtube’s policy on depiction of harmful activities’

    Can you look into why?

  3. I watched it, had a laugh, then less then 5 minutes later the video has been removed for “depiction of harmful activities”.. What the..?!

  4. Good on ya, Noni. That’s gold. Imagine if we actually lived in a world where fascists made all the rules, like who’s allowed to swear in a YouTube clip. Thank f*ck we don’t.

  5. Out-f##king-standing! Well done Noni, probably your best work yet.
Also, that was the first classical guitar piece i ever learned to play, (the andantino) so I am beside myself with joy for many reasons.
And nuts to you wowsers who don’t like it.

  6. I like it when things like this come up, it’s like seeing you favorite TV star in a show thats PG and then they do a movie or interview and the F work is dropped, love it!

  7. David – I think what she may say to you, a tv blogger, and what she says off the record are two very different things. But funny you should mention the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture at the 2007 SPAA Conference – you would have heard her take a swipe at a number of very good Australian created Children’s TV shows, claiming that Play School is really the only good one, forgetting at the same time mind you that Play School is a UK format.

  8. @AH Children shouldn’t be stumbling accross anything on the internet because they should be supervised any parent that is not doing this needs there head read and noni swearing is going to be the least of their problems

  9. Fancy having a go at Noni! God forbid that she ever plays a grown up role…what would the little ones say. If they are using youtube unsupervised then they should f#%f off to bed!

  10. Luv it – she is a national treasure: 2 time AFI Best Lead Actress, and Logie winner. That voice is iconic – when i was watching the Leaky Boat doco her familiar and warm tones beautifully brought the program to life. A fine dramatic actor and a veteran presenter on Play School and Better Homes. A very funny clip. Only sainted parents would not have ever said this to their young child. Talented woman.

  11. Pure gold. Absolute joy. Watch Limited News and its right-wing sycophants lay into Noni and her “left wing lunatics” from the ABC and Play School like they normally do and make a mountain of a molehill.

  12. How irresponsible of Noni. And she’s not a champion of children’s television at all. She is super critical of every other children’s show except Play School. You outta hear what she has to say on the matter when not in public. This foolish action has just confirmed all that I thought about her. What if a child were to stumble across this clip, rightly thinking Noni from Play School was going to read them a story?

    1. AH: Don’t agree. I’ve heard what she says about children’s television because I have discussed it with her. Criticism is directed at shows that fall short, programming issues etc. She has an extensive history in this field including National Ambassador for child welfare charity Barnados Australia, and a number of industry speeches on the state of children’s television, including the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture at the 2007 SPAA Conference. Frankly, she should be in the Hall of Fame by now.

The YouTube clip title would indicate what kids are clicking onto, but I do acknowledge it’s controversial. Think it was meant to be.
