Renewed: Falling Skies

Steven Spielberg's sci-fi drama just got the thumbs up for a second season after becoming FOX8's biggest ever drama episode.

The invasion (or at least the post-invasion) began on Australian screens last night, and now sci-fi series Falling Skies has been renewed in the US.

The Steven Spielberg drama starring Noah Wyle has been a ratings success for cable channel TNT so far, with its premiere posting as the most-watched cable debut of the year.

Falling Skies is a true standout series, from its ambitious storytelling, high-profile cast and production team to its phenomenal success when it comes to international and time-shifted viewing,” said Michael Wright, head of programming for TNT.

“We’re reaching new audiences with Falling Skies and look forward to seeing where this fascinating and exciting series takes us next.”

The first season is 10 episodes long and the renewal adds another 10 episodes to its output.

Updated: Falling Skies becomes the highest ever drama episode for FOX8. Figures due next week.

  1. @Andrew – I guess you have to consider the events that happened, they feel beaten most of the time and can’t see much hope.

My only criticism is the aliens traveled all the way here, wipe out 90% of the human race and now are building something. But have stopped actively hunting the humans, almost like they are not worth the trouble. It does become clear they are up to something so the show is more of a mystery than full on action/war scifi drama.

I like it and it’s great they have 10 more eps to continue the story. I can’ only assume the first 10 were finished before it went to air in the US (where ep 5 is this weekend) so will we have some cliffhanger or some kind of conclusion at the end of ep 10? Time will tell if this is any better than recent network failings The Event and FlashForward.

  2. I was surprised by how many ads I’ve seen for this show. They’re on every second bus. Whatever the ratings suggest, it’s got a lot of weak points. The main criticism is that the story revolves around a group of 300 people fleeing the alien invasion but there aren’t many voice roles. Of the characters who do speak, half of them are played without any flair by the actors.

  3. Watched this last night. Won’t be watching again. I had to force myself to watch and not fast forward through the melodrama.
I would have loved for the first episode to show how they got into that situation and then take it from there. Not the small snippets they showed.

  4. Craig, falling skies ratings on Fox8 have nothing to do with it’s renewal for a second series. OS ratings for a program don’t contribute to the decision making process in renewal. You realize this, correct?

  5. Oh, it’a a sci-fi invasion show?

I saw bus stop posters for it the last couple of weeks and from them, assumed it was one of those fraught but earnest family dramas about cancer or depression or something.

They really need to speak to their ad agency. Even if I had pay TV I wouldn’t have watched it based on that poster!

  6. Looks like FTA dropped the ball on this one, thank god as we know there would be a high chance they would be moving it next week if it was on 7, 9 or 10.

I like the show and it shows how scifi done right will rate on the right channel.

  7. Just started watching this series, glad it wont be a waste of time. Im waiting for it to really hook me though, so far the beginning isnt to original, humans trying to survive after an alien invasion has been done before. But the series does have an epic ‘movie’ feel about it, so hoping it leads to an interesting original storyline.
