Video Hits future in doubt

TEN says no shows have been axed but reports about the future of Video Hits joins a bleak and growing list.

Long-running music show Video Hits became the latest title to be added to TEN’s potential casualty list yesterday.

Several media outlets have already reported the show is gone.

Yesterday a TEN spokesperson told TV Tonight that no shows had yet been axed.

But redundancies that have been offered to staff may ultimately prove to be a red letter day for shows including Sports Tonight, TEN Late News and TEN Evening News on Sunday.

6:30 with George Negus is expected to stay until the end of the year, but there are reports Negus could be replaced by Hamish MacDonald or Hugh Riminton if the show itself is kept. A rise in ratings would secure the show.

Sandra Sully is expected to remain with the network.

TEN is currently looking for expressions of interest in voluntary redundancies – applications are due by July 13, with the company looking to complete the process within three weeks.

  1. i agree it needs to dump the current format. the interviews and hosts are so monotone. and i rarely care about them. and start playing the popular music with high budget videos. all the indie/ triple J music might be good but their shoelace budget videos never make good tv. There is obviously someone behind the scenes that is passionate about their music but has no idea on how to run a commercial tv show. stick with Gaga, Katy, BEP ect.

  2. This show needs to be kept on-air.
It’s so important there’s an outlet for new Aussie music in particular.
As things are, we are dominated by American rappers and “collaborations”.
I remember Sounds in the 70’s and 80’s and think it would be such a shame to lose a Saturday/Sunday music show that features interviews etc.

  3. I’m with the rest. I don’t want hosts and interviews, I just want clips. I really like both the hosts, but I don’t care less about commentary, i just want music.

  4. Video Hits was always unprofessional anyway.
I remember when interviewing elmo you couldn’t even hear him. And it still went out, not even live, in mute. And Southern Cross Ten hasn’t played it in ages. I don’t blame them either, not that their terrible music shows (we have 3) are any better. (they’re the definition of unprofessional.)

  5. Youtube is fine for those who have a computer….you may be surprised that there are still a lot of folk ..who do not own one….
Also …I prefered the old format….just playing clips….gave up when all the chit chat and hosts came into it…..
Also liked the shows when they showed clips from previous years….
Cannot see how this would be costly….unless the price of the clips have gone up…?!?

  6. Video Hits isn’t about the music videos anymore it’s about the hosts. They talk more than the number of clips played. And i want Rage to get back to showing the top 50 every Saturday morning.

  7. Video Hits has been unwatchable since they altered the original format and introduced co-hosts back in… 2004? If they wanted a correspondent to interview artists at music festivals and the like, then they could have just hired some drone to perform said task; but I don’t want to watch some dope giving their insignificant opinions between every damn music clip.

Besides, I don’t understand why Ten would even consider axing Video Hits of all shows. Ditch the hosts if you want to save on them sweet dollar bills, sure; but the show in its original host-free format would cost next to nothing to make; and a show that has been running for this long should have a guaranteed viewer base.

While YouTube does include most of the videos that are broadcast on the programme, shows such as this also afford viewers the opportunity to see videos that they probably would not have discovered otherwise (at least that rings true for the late-night editions of Rage).

  8. The 7pm Project also getting woeful ratings lately up against some competition but it’s never rated well with even sitcom repeats beating it. Who knows maybe it will be next…

  9. Video Hits sucks at the moment anyway. They should actually play popular music videos and not random stuff that the minority would listen to. And maybe fix up the hosts as well – i don’t really want to see hosts on tv wearing sunglasses even when they’re indoors half the time!

  10. @Nell they’re trying to reduce costs – not move them to other shows. They won’t be making many new announcements I wouldn’t have thought.

  11. With all these axings when are we going to hear the the new fabulous and creative shows they are making? New dramas and sitcoms we can get excited about. Is there any chance?

  12. Surely you can’t get a cheaper show to produce than video hits. Most of the content is supplied. Just don’t understand. At this rate I can see the test patten making a comeback!!!

  13. I have to admit to not having watched Video Hits for many years, but i do recall its beginning in 1986 or 1987 and enjoying it for many years. Has it been superseded by youtube? I hope it stays.
