Matthew Newton criticises “tabloid trash”

"This ‘journalist’ writes as though he is literally inside my head" an angry Matthew Newton writes, following a print article on his personal life.

Fallen performer Matthew Newton has responded to a Herald Sun article last weekend, titled Matthew Newton: Curse of a famous name.

“Sad, angry reclusive. Matthew Newton’s troubled life is a very public train wreck. But Andrew Rule finds many who say: Don’t write him off yet,” noted the subheading.

The article quoted an anonymous former Xavier College classmate, a former actor who knew Newton at drama school, another woman who went through drama school, a leading TV drama producer and an unnamed source who watched him grow up. Four others who were quoted were named.

But now Newton has criticised much of the contents, branding it “tabloid trash.”

“As I wish to be brief, and not give this article undue attention, I am not going to single out, one by one, all of the glaring gaps in its logic, tone, and over confident conclusions,” he wrote in response.

“This ‘journalist’ writes as though he is literally inside my head and has been virtually since the day I was born; basing his arguments on ‘anonymous’ sources from various stages of my life. I don’t give any value to the words of someone who does not have the conviction or honesty to put their name to their own words. I believe the only time someone is justified in saying something and not have their name stand beside that statement is when their life or the lives of the people close to them could potentially be put in danger by doing so. But we are not living in Berlin before The Wall came down and I am a private citizen with no power to harm or effect their livelihood.”

  1. The article I read a week ago didn’t come across to me as a beat up at all, rather more encouraging him. It reminded me of what a decent actor he actually is.

  2. Dick , you make a good point but a lot of people hide behind blaming a mental illness.
I’m not saying Matthew is or isn’t , I don’t know him, I’m just saying.

  3. @Peter Ford. The statement was all over Twitter. You and numerous others retweeted Chris Murphy’s extended tweet of almost a week ago now. It was hardly a secret. That it wasn’t reported in Condfidential means maybe that some sections of the media are leaving him alone.

  4. I have always found Matthew Newton to be a very talented actor.
However he has misbehaved badly in public at times, his family must have known for years that he had problems,
Sooo…… I guess he is paying for his problems now.

  5. A lot of people seem to want to kick him while he is down. Give the guy a chance to sort himself out. We all make mistakes, and everyone deserves another chance. I agree with Matthew, it is so easy to comment on his life anonymously. I don’t five any credit to articles that quote anonymous sources. My best wishes are with Matthew and his family, for a bright and happy future

  6. Matthew has an illness he needs to get under control. The media should leave him alone to get on with it, and he should not be making public statements.

  7. Wow, maybe if the powers that be in this country allocated more money to mental health education and services then people would be more understanding and sympathetic. I can only assume the harsh comments are coming from those who have never had to deal with close friends or family members who have a mental illness.

  8. Hey IronicReference, unsure what your beef with me is. I simply pointed out the statement existed and no mainstream media outlets had shown an interest. This is odd seeing many have offered massive $ for him to do an interview. I made absolutely no comment at all about Matthew’s past or illness. I am not doing spin for anyone just highlighting there is an aspect to the story that had been buried.

  9. Who cares? This guy is old news.

I’m sure its very tragic that he feels like he got beaten up in a media story, but he brought it on himself when he started abusing women. The history of drug abuse doesn’t help his cause either.

  10. The very “impartial” Peter Ford seems to be pushing this line! Of course whilst attempting to maintain a distance to not tarnish himself. For some reason Matthew thinks we should care how he feels and admonish a respected journalist’s piece on him. He may disagree with parts but surely should just shut up! If one of his exes came out and put their face to these claims against him, Peter and his mates would still find a way to spin it. Get a grip.

  11. Whatever, he did some things that he will always be remembered for and someone has written about them and now he is criticizing their report, where’s the logic, maybe if they had nothing to write about there wouldn’t be an article to criticize?

  12. Normally I’d agree but he’s not exactly a saint so they’re all bad as each other , if people live their lives as best they can they don’t attract this stuff.
