How good does this trailer look for The Slap, ABC1’s new drama coming in September?
Two episodes have premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival and from early accounts it’s a winner.

The first episode follows the now 40-year-old Hector (Jonathan LaPaglia) and takes three quarters of the running time get to the titular event. The moment is handled perfectly; it’s crucial that judgements associated with the event — right or wrong, justified or not — are entirely left to the viewer to determine.
The dramas and interpersonal relationships are engrossing from the get-go, the story like a David Williamson script that actually has bite, tension and doesn’t pander to racial or cultural stereotypes. The Slap presents a view of middle class multicultural Australia rarely seen in film and television.

The writers and actors (including 2 Home and Away graduates) have done a great job of making the characters softer and more likeable and believable than they were in the book. We get the feeling we might not like all of them, but we’re certainly going to understand them better.

Of course! We definitely do not want a 3-way Australian drama tussle. That means The Slap will end up on a week night – that’s ok. Very tough if Wild Boys and Underbelly have to compete. Seven could easily move it to Mondays.
If they go Sunday, they should not have the jobs that they’re in.
“Thankyou For Smoking” @ 0’21?
The acting looks impressive, will definitely give this a go.
I really hope the ABC has the courage to programme this on Sunday night. After attending a Q&A at MIFF I got the feeling the ABC are nervous about it being “controversial”. Please commission bold and risky Australian drama you are prepared to broadcast on Sunday night – not lame, tame soap destined for Thursdays!
Feels like a Sunday show but there’s about to be some serious competition on Sundays and we don’t want Underbelly / Wild Boys /The Slap in a three way tussle. I’m not sure they have room to move….
It’s the type of show the critics will love as they may see it as ‘intelligent’ but wont be popular with the masses.
LMAO at Kev, below! 😉
PS: This looks amazing.
At this stage, could only say I found it interesting enough to watch the 1st ep, which I believe there are 8 of. To say it is good or bad, or any performer is good or bad, I wouldn’t go that far, with just those couple of minutes alone to go by. But, worth a first ep watch of at the very least I think.
I’m looking forward to this series and even more so because one episode was filmed in my friend’s house in Northcote (Melbourne). I was so excited even though she told me like 3 months after filming. They packed most of their house up and drove it off to the ABC studios at Riponlea for 3 days.
Oh for the good old days when you could slap a misbehaving brat and not have it turn into an eight part mini- series! 🙂
I thought Melissa George was a revelation co-starring with Gabriel Byrne in the first season of ‘In Treatment’. I hope the TV adaptation of The Slap is good. The novel is Tsiolkas’ least adventurous and the erotic sequences are formulaic and predictable.
Nothing special, typecast actors, doesn’t interest me in the slightest. Any money this won’t rate.
The background music elevates it to another level! I like what I see!
Agree, it looks great. This is the type of drama that the ABC should be showing, not the mess that is Crownies.
So glad Melissa George is doing something other then a horror movie, she really has turned into a scream queen.
Looks good – though have to agree, Melissa George was never and – on the strength of this trailer – remains not a great actor.
What a cast! Looks absolutely brilliant.
Perhaps they should have called it “push & shove” based on that trailer?
the trailor looks great. I’m looking forward in watching the show
Really looking forward to this, it looks fantastic. What a great cast!
Yes – it’s a great trailer. Cannot wait! This looks like a return to form for Australian drama on the ABC – a drama that is actually telling a story a and is about something – us! It could equally be titled “The way we live now”.
Looks interesting but can’t stand Melissa Georgie, I much prefer the trailer for twentysomething which will be on ABC2 I discovered linked to this vid.
show that on here!
The book is so fantastic, so engrossing and thought provoking, I just hope this series does it justice.
Sounds very promising withe the script, geez you could go to town with that one, just make sure you have constraint too to give it the class it deserves.
Great trailer
