Audience Inventory: Viewers plea for shows to be completed

In the annual Audience Inventory survey, readers demand shows to be completed, nominate Nine as the most unreliable and ABC as the most trustworthy in programming.

The number one grievance of television viewers is networks failing to finish a series once they have started it.

It is closely followed by networks failing to keep their EPG up to date and problems with shows that never start or finish on time.

These were the top 3 viewer complaints in the annual TV Tonight, Audience Inventory, an extensive survey of over 1300 readers. They were also the three burning issues in the 2010 and 2009 surveys.

Typical of some of the comments were:

– Viewers are treated with such contempt.
– The most frustrating thing is the constant shifting on shows between time slots and the sudden cancellation of many new shows after 1 or 2 episodes.
– Television is meant to be relaxation. When it turns into work to track down where a show has gone, what time it’s on etc, then the networks have lost the plot, totally.
– Programming decisions sometimes appear to have been made so that a show delibrately fails.
– Keep it fresh and stick to times and gives show a longer go before axing or moving time.
– Shifting timeslots of a series is a pain in the derriere, all good shows on late at night.
– Really annoyed at starting times of programmes 7.05 etc instead of just 7.00.
– Stop cancelling good shows !!!
– Broadcasters now seem more fixated on each other than on the viewer.
– Consistency please!

Of least importance with viewers were calls for ‘More 3D TV broadcasts’ and ‘Merging public broadcasters’, also mirroring 2010 responses.

Channel Nine was again regarded as the network which is most unreliable, most untrustworthy at delivering shows and worst at rescheduling cancelled shows.

Yet again ABC wins the most reliable and trustworthy at programming. Seven, which ranked second in the untrustworthy question, at least got the nod as the network which best reschedules cancelled shows. A backhanded, compliment perhaps?

With the amount of changes to programming, electronic guides are the preferred choice of Guide. The on-screen EPG is the most popular Guide, up by 7% on 2010. Guide apps on tablets and smartphones were up 10%. But it’s bad news for the print industry with both newspaper and magazine Guides diminishing in popularity.

95% of TV Tonight readers have made the switch to digital television, up 5% on 2010. 70% have an HD digital TV, up 11% on last year.

ELEVEN has made a good debut with readers, ranking well as both a channel watched and in viewer satisfaction.

82% of readers indicated they had never been asked to participate in a Ratings survey. 5% had participated in the last 5 years.

PART TWO: Pay TV results

  1. I wouldn’t class Eleven as being reliable at all with shows like 90210 and Smallville, as the opposite is the case. Both shows needed and need to be screened in double episodes.

  2. Ok so the 3 biggest issues were also the top 3 issues in 2010 and 2009. So what’s the bet nothing will change by this time next year. Networks, look at this survey and bloody do something about it. Lift your game. These days I watch so many tv shows, but strangely my tv is rarely on. And the networks are to blame for that.

  3. Wow that Ten figure of 77% is a tad disturbing seeing they get smshed in the ratings.

Kind of makes you really wonder how accurate the poll is of most TV viewers when it’s been filled in by mostly watchers/fans/employees of the third most popular network.

  4. @Lisa – yeah I agree with TEN being viewed by most visitors to this site, I probably watch TEN and it’s digital channels more total hours than any of the others.

Great work David, I hope the networks are listening but given that some have slipped in their approval ‘ratings’ maybe some haven’t?

  5. Either Oztam gets it wrong every morning, or this survey was completed by 10 employees. Nobody watches ten except when Masterchef is on.
I think a lot of the people that complete these surveys have never stepped foot inside a TV station. TV is a business, if something doesnt rate, it needs to go. FTA doesn’t have the luxury of a paying subscriber base. Why keep something in the schedule when only 40,000 people are watching it out of 20+ million?
I think networks will take note of a few of these results, but the rest don’t ring true with what Oztam is saying.
Perhaps an indepth investigation in to Ozatam needs to be done.

  6. Of the commercial channels, 11 does seem best at sticking to a schedule. You can turn on the TV to 11 and roughly know what is going to be on. And having Ferguson stick to 10.30 every night is a huge bonus – compared to Letterman and Conan that can air anytime from 11.30 right up to 1.30am, or not at all. Let’s hope they renew that for 2012.

  7. @Lisa – The question was “Which FTA channels do you watch regularly?”, not “Which FTA channel do you watch the most?”.
As for age of Seven’s audience, suggest you take a look at the Seven demos. posted yesterday.
I’m 67 and watch 7 and 10 “regularly”, Nine rarely, and have switched from Seven to ABC24 for news, which I probably watch “most”.

  8. Nine, Seven and Ten are really all as bad as each other for starting programmes on time. The reason why Nine came out on top is probably that there are just so many people who hate Nine with a passion and will rate it ‘Worst’ for everything.

As for delivering and rescheduling shows on the other hand, Nine actually is the worst and deserves its vote.

  9. A couple of things. Each ratings meter equates to 22,000 viewers, so multiply by 1351 and we have a fair number of equivalent viewers. Yeah I know scientifically, not perfect, but the resposnses are a guide. So if ch9 want to improve and claw back their ratings, they need to take on board the responses of this survey, whether they believe it or not. There is a big message for them and that is why they will not win regularly until they improve.

Next year can we have a question along the lines of ” tosspot tv message you hate the most” eg “special time” “first with the news” y’know all that dumb downed crap that you would like to shove back down a tv execs throat….cheers mate

  10. The networks should take notice of this survey, they seem to take notice of 3000 homes with people meters. It seems pretty accurate to me, especially with the results for channel 9.

  11. But if networks do not reshedule television programs, we will be wasting timeslots for popular programs with a greater fanbase. Its not just ratings its also what we want. and if ratings are not well established and other shows are then obiously viewers would rather waatch and prefer that program.

  12. Which FTA channels do you watch regularly?*
    TEN 77%

Interesting that TEN is top with TV Tonight readers but coming last in the ratings race at the moment. Says something about your readers or says something about the age of Seven’s audience?

  13. What would be ideal David is that the networks pay attention to the survey. Especially the fact of programs not starting on time or starting at stupid times. Thank you for taking the time once again to do the survey and collate.
