Natarsha Belling leads new-look weekend TEN News team

Updated: Natarsha Belling, Matt Doran, Rob Canning and Magdelena Rose will front TEN's weekend News.

TEN has announced its presenting team for its revamped weekend News bulletin.

It includes Sydney presenter Natarsha Belling, reporter Matt Doran, sports reporter Rob Canning and former Weather Channel presenter Magdelena Rose.

The 90 minute bulletin will replace the current local bulletins in various states and the 6pm bulletin the currently airs from Sydney.

I’m still not sold on the idea of 90 minutes of news on the weekend. Last night I watched 15 minutes of a local bulletin, about half of which was fluff. Not much happens on Sundays!

But I do like the contemporary look of this team. I think it helps bring TEN back to offering the point of difference it used to demonstrate. Or maybe it’s just the smooth job the photographer and stylist did.

Updated: Network TEN is pleased to announce the team fronting its extended weekend News at Five bulletin will be led by Natarsha Belling and Matt Doran.

Already the face of TEN’s weekend news and one of Australian TV’s most recognised and popular news
presenters, Natarsha Belling has more than a decade of experience reporting and breaking some of the
nation’s major news. Colleague Matt Doran has reported on this year’s biggest stories, from Japan’s tsunami to New Zealand’s earthquake, quickly developing a reputation as one of Australia’s best new talents.

Natarsha Belling says: “For many years TEN has led the way in providing our viewers with a fantastic news service at Five and now we will deliver that same great product seven days a week.”

“As always our news service will be a point of difference, with a smart and informative approach to the issues that matter most. Our team is passionate about striving to deliver the best possible product, so our loyal viewers stay informed about the latest news, sport and weather from their own backyard and across the
country.”

Joining them on the desk is accomplished meteorologist and journalist Magdalena Roze, a fresh addition to the TEN news team who comes with a wealth of experience from her roles at The Weather Channel, National Geographic, and from her regular guest slots on breakfast radio programs across Australia including 4BC, 2GB and 6PR.

“I’m thrilled to join the TEN News family as part of a dynamic weekend News team. The weather is something that impacts every single person, every day, whether it’s family bbqs, weekend sport or farming. It’s a privilege to share my passion for weather with Australians and I’m committed to keeping Australians informed about the weather that affects them.”

Completing the team and delivering all the latest sporting news is TEN’s Rob Canning. Already an invaluable asset in TEN’s news-room, Rob is well known to viewers nationally for his contribution to TEN News and as one of the key journalists and presenters on Sports Tonight.

TEN’s 90 minute extended bulletin brings the weekend in line with the weeknight News at Five bulletin, and marks the Network’s commitment to building a comprehensive news line-up.

The wealth of experience from reporters, crews and journalists in each of the states will be an invaluable resource in delivering content to this program, and with more time for more news, it aims to provide audiences with the most complete wrap up of the weekend’s events.

TEN’s weekend News at Five begins next month.

  1. Cant wait for more fluff stories and PR puff pieces. Like the cat was stuck up a tree or something! At one stage they had inbetween their news bulletions Jamies 30 minute meals. That was a strange way of showing the news. Obviously the cupboard is rather bare over at 10 with money. As its all been pumped into George Negus’s 6:30pm which isn’t that great either.

Thank goodness there is the ABC at 7pm, as well as SBS at 6:30pm.

  2. There’s a lot more to a 90 minute weekend news bulletin than a pretty ‘talent’ shot.

    What about content?

I predict the same old, same old – if it didn’t happen in Sydney, who cares!

  3. I was hoping to see Natarsha co-host Breakfast.. although she probably isnt keen on getting up at 3am. I also agree 90 minutes is overkill.. I expect this to drop back to an hour

  4. Hello Matt Doran. 90 minutes of just Matt Doran, yeah i’ll watch. But a 90 minute news bulletin i think is too much, and will prob not help Ten news.

And awesome, didn’t know we can write ‘bullshit’ on here. Good to know.

  5. @Animal: The state that will switch off in droves is QLD. We are guaranteed a hour delay for weekend news on Ten, for the next six months: i.e. the bulletin will be two-thirds over, by the time it begins to air in QLD.

  6. @Dodge. I personally have no problem with slim good looking people presenting the News, Sports and Weather. If you were being sarcastic and having a go that there are not any reporters or hosts from multicultural backgrounds well maybe its because they dont rate. Personally i prefer good looking people on Tv reading news rather than people who dont look good, Yes iam vain but i am just telling it like it is, even it is not politically correct. Nartasha is hot amazingly still has it the rest of the team is pretty good the new Weather presenter is pretty hot as well. Still i think they are good at what they do. I know i have said that i like good looking people on tv but i also want them to be able to do the job professionally as well that is more important.

  7. The only way 90 minutes would work on the Weekend is in something similar to the following:

    5:00pm – International News
    5:30pm – Sports
    6:00pm – National News + Weather

They would then have to be serious about it, devoting time to each story. They have 90 minutes to fill – it’s better for them to fill it with content, than jumping from one liners, short pieces and quick mentions that 6pm News typically have to fit into 15 minutes.

As not much happens on the weekend, it would also be good to use the 90 minutes to go over stories that have happened during the week.

Don’t just mention the news – as I said, they have time; explore it and tell the story with a bit of depth. Kind of like a certain other show that has yet to do so, but this time they would have to. 😉

They would then have to realise that this won’t rate. Most people will just want that 6pm bulletin style news, especially on the Weekend. With 90 minutes it is impossible to do that, and trying to will just alienate people.

What I mentioned is a needed format to pursue, though, and would have an audience that would return and interact with it. It’d be a winner in that area and be a differentiating factor that would find and fill a much needed niche.

But this is all only if they take it seriously. If they don’t; well, it won’t last. 😛

Live up to your slogan, Ten. Seriously! 😉

  8. The pic is great. Looks like it’s straight from the set of Friends! And Natarsha is a great reader (and quite lovely too)! A step in the right direction for Ten.

  9. I will be watching – good idea going with an up and coming journalist Matt Doran (and a stunner) over someone like Ron Wilson or Frank Colletta – I’ll be watching!

    Great team!

  10. You are right David, not much happens on Sundays. It would be great if they turned it into say the first 45 minutes of news and the rest a news magazine style program, like they did back in the 60’s & 70’s on the Sunday night news bulletins, if you recall.
