NBL rejects live broadcasts on TEN

The NBL has rejected an offer of one live game each week on Network TEN every Sunday afternoon.

The NBL has rejected an offer of one live game each week on Network TEN every Sunday afternoon.

As a result TEN will show three games a week on delay on ONE.

The Herald Sun reports the terms of the five-year TV rights deal between the NBL and TEN called for an increase from two games a week to three for the 2011-12 season.

After showing almost all games live last season, TEN has followed the terms of the agreement that called for games to be shown live or near-live, finally opting for three games to be telecast on delay within the three-hour window available after tip-off.

While the NBL appears to have stuck to the original deal in the hope of gaining some leverage for live games, TEN was willing to compromise and show one live game rather than three on delay.

“We offered them a live game on TEN on Sunday afternoons,” TEN’s head of sport David Barham said yesterday.

“They didn’t take it so we’ll be showing three games on delay. Three games a week is still a pretty big commitment by us.”

Earlier this month TEN announced a four hour block of netball every Sunday afternoon from March to July next year.

  1. @Leon,Former NBL Fan & Terry. THe NBL walked away from Fox Sports because of how they treated the sport in the later part of the former contract, they only showed two live matches at best, one on a weekday (wednesday) and one on a weekend (saturday) to me that is not how the sport should have been treated, so the asumption by you three is complete crap. Ten treated the sport very well last year and if it wasnt for the new board member you know who they are i dont need to mention them, Ten would have been showing all the matches Live this year on ONE. It was just bad timing i guess, and for those who are saying that basketball doesnt work live have you looked at the NBA? the broadcasters cover matches live in primetime yes, and yes you can answer back by saying that Basketball is more popular in US then in AUS still Live basketball works, Ten last year worked around the not enough brakes and so have the american broadcasters. This is appauling news from basketball australia, BA probably wanted all live or none live, i guess they quickly got up themselves which is a shame. Hopefully it will only be a half hour delay if its anymore then the sport will again die out. If it goes back to Fox that will be the nail in the coffin for sure. What is the point of having it on pay tv when only 25 percent of the nation has pay tv, and considering how arogant the pay tv industry has become with the overpricing of there service then i cant imagine many if any baskeball fans getting pay tv.

  2. I have had been told that ONE will drop all Serie A and Bundesliga telecast as of next month but with continue showing EPL on delay via their deal with Liverpool and Aresenal tv what a disgrace, especially since they were usually getting the best Bundesliga game plus they were the only English rights holder to Seria A. Not happy.
