What have they done to Good News Week?

Can we have it back now please?

Jump the Shark: “In its initial usage, it referred to the point in a television program’s history where it has “outlived its freshness” where viewers feel “the writers have run out of ideas” and that “the series has [lost] what made it attractive.”These changes were often the result of efforts to revive interest in a show whose audience had begun to decline. – Wikipedia.

  1. i remember coming across GNW on the ABC one night while channel surfing, thought it was bloody funny, then it jumped to TEN and it was the same show, still funny, still true to its self… then came the GNW live on saturday nights, it became to much and quikly sunk. then after like 7 years of our screens it returns again its the same show, its even more funny. then in 2011 the series returned with a few minor changes that saw the show end….. until GNWorld kicked of last night….. if GNWorld was playing a game show you would here the “bah bow” bell. sorry but the show didnt just jump shark it got eaten alive. it was boring. the set looked way to serious for a comedy/news program. Paul was funny but without the other teams there to throw in there jokes it got very boring very fast and adding Akmul to the main cast? wtf, he is annoying and not at all funny. sorry GNWorld but the only Good News was the end of the show, if only i was able to keep watching, but sadly i couldnt watch the train wreck continue……. Bah bow!!

  2. Oh my, this was so bad I only lasted about 20 mins. Loved the old GNW. This was just so boring and unfunny…Kind of reminded me of the Ben Elton thing – it was similar in its cringe-worthiness.

  3. I can understand a show wanting to revamp itself, but to change the entire format? I could only manage the first 10 minutes of it, and it was awful. It lacked all the charm it originally had, and lost the best bit about it – the ad lib! GNW is a panel show, always has been and that’s how it should remain. Get rid of this awful interpretation and bring back GNW!

  4. It was basically an hour of hanging sh*t on the Government, mixed in with the repetitiveness of literally the same Underbelly joke played four times. While funny at first, nothing changed.

Plus only 590,000 in the ratings for its first week? Do I hear the word bomba?

  5. Sure, we shouldn’t simply support Aussie made shows Just because they’re Australian. However, I think that it’s sad to hear all of these armchair experts stating that that they would never watch this show again.
A bit of constructive criticism is great and might help improve the show.
Giving up because the first episode wasn’t what you expected is a bit shallow, don’t you think?!?

  6. I watched this show with a open mind and hopefully a chance to enjoy myself and have a good laugh , but last nights show was very weak on laughs and In my view was tacky , however I’m going to give this show another chance next week because sometimes these programs just need a chance to grow .

  7. @alfagirl, I agree with you. The inference that people should support Australian shows, no matter what, is flawed. People should support quality productions, no matter where they are from. Just because something is Australian does not mean it is good or worthwhile. It is sometimes the case that the Australian shows are ghastly – poorly written, badly acted, poor direction, lousy production values, any number of reasons why audiences don’t take to them.

  8. One of the funniest Australian comedies, and it has only screened one episode. I hope we never see Good News Week on our televisions again, that show is horrible.

  9. I loved Good News Week, but 10 minutes into Good News World I turned off my TV as it was an insult to what the show used to be. The comedians are terrific but the show did not do them justice. Hopefully in the coming weeks they integrate more of what the audience loved about Good News Week into this new format otherwise it will die – simple as that.

  10. I was a big fan of GNWeek, but the last couple of years saw it lose a lot of quality, and going to the ninety minute format meant it lacked any tightness – it just became flabby. As such, I was dead keen for GNWorld, which I was hoping would give talented comedians a chance to shine.

Nah, it didn’t. It really was awful. I got half way though and couldn’t handle it anymore. You know (and I’ll probably be lynched for this), one of the big problems about GNWeek (for me) was that McDermott and Robbins had lost much of their humour, and last night pretty much reinforced that. I’m not down on this cause it’s Australian, I’m down on it cause it’s awful.

Rather than replace GNWeek, they should have reformatted it – new host, new captains, new games and back to the tightly edited version we used to have.

  11. hmm. I liked it, I thought it was okay – but it wasn’t any great, and I don’t see myself falling in love with it. It almost feels as if it, as a format, might get rather old quickly.

It missed Good News Week’s unscripted spontaneity and “live” feel that the panel+audience gave.

  12. To the people who reprimand us about the importance of supporting Australian shows and local talent get over yourselves. If a programme is good it will be supported no matter where it comes from or who is in it. The show last night didn’t do it for me because it was too long and boring not because it was Australian.

  13. hmmm it they are comparing it too the daily show…hang your head in shame…. Jon Stewart is funny, these guys arent…and you dont have someone on a show like this like Mikey Robbins (if thats his name) who only ever seems happy when he thinks of a joke and usually he is the only one laughing….. time to say goodbye to this show and Paul should do what his other friends from his DAAS days…and just do something else…. and i also agree with other comments in that they really need fresh new people on it fo it to survive

  14. Are you guys insane?!?!?! Good News World was not funny. It was awful! Cringe-worthy, contrived… The jokes and sketches were not funny.

Good News Week was a great, lively, entertaining show.

Good News World is the complete opposite. The editing is too snappy as well.

  15. Big fan of GNW. Big fan of Tim, Cal and Akmal. But switched off at the second ad break. It was boring. Even the sets were boring. And FYI, not all people are over panel game shows (Spicks and Specks rules!).

  16. I think what needs to be understood is that GNW would have been cancelled anyway due to dismal ratings. I thought the show was excellent and the puppet was hilarious! I do agree, maybe make it a bit more live like SNL but apart from that it was very entertaining.
