AFL changes bounce times for 2012

AFL start times will change for 2012 and are set to benefit Seven and Foxtel.

The AFL has announced changes to the 2012 fixture which will impact on television broadcasts:

1.45pm will become the start time on Saturdays and 3.15pm on Sundays.

Friday night matches will begin at 7.50pm, rather than 7.40pm.

A Saturday twilight game has been created, starting at 4.40pm.

Saturday night games have been pushed back from 7.10pm to 7.40pm.

The Saturday shift allows Foxtel to show three games back-to-back on its upcoming 24-hour football channel.

The later start on Sunday will allow Seven to show the game live before its 6pm news bulletin.

Meanwhile, Seven Adelaide has confirmed it will show live AFL Friday night football through all 23 rounds of the regular season and finals in 2012.

Seven Adelaide also said it would televise Saturday night matches live throughout “most of the season”.

Friday’s Better Homes and Gardens moves to Thursdays.

Seven has not yet clarified if any games will be simulcast on 7mate.

  1. Frankie, how did the NBL get screwed over by Ten? The NBL signed a contract that allowed Ten to show games on up to 3 hour delay and a 3 hour delay has been the case for most games this season. The NBL should have signed a contract that said the broadcaster will show the games live. Ten aren’t doing anything wrong or screwing anyone. The people that signed the contract at the NBL are a disgrace and should be sacked.

I don’t know why these fringe sports think FTA networks are a solution. Superleague games used to be in prime time on Fox Sports and now are on at midnight on nine. The NBL used to be live on Fox Sports and now is on at 10:30 on FTA.

  2. @ Michael I think the NBL have made the right call after being screwed over by Ten. Last night was ridiculous, the match was on a delay of about 15 minutes into Melbourne from Perth.

  3. @Brenton: a good solution will be to skip Today Tonight on Friday nights and show Home and Away at 6.30pm, but it is probable that there will be double episodes of H&A at 7pm Thursdays during the AFL season.

  4. i suppose us here in the west will miss out as always given the games will air at the same time as Seven News/Today Tonight (WST). And i’m sure that even though we have all these digital channels showing repeated content they won’t use it to show a live broadcast.

  5. Great news for us in Adelaide with live Friday night footy. Finally. Although there’s a lot of Carlton games who i can’t stand so hoping Nine Adelaide wakes up to themselves and schedules live NRL on GEM.

We’ve got a dud draw being a Port Adelaide supporter, but good tv result given we get every game broadcast on fta in Adelaide. Clearly the AFL doesn’t want to help increase our crowds, but happy for us to stay home and watch on tv.

  6. 1st time for this site
This is old news 28/4/2011 that news came out

yes 7mate will be use in Sydney

  7. Will that mean Home And Away will air at 6:50pm to 7:20pm in Adelaide on Friday nights? With AFL starting at 7:20pm (7:50pm) Melbourne time?
Having said that, that may not be allowed as H&A is a PG rated program that legally isn’t allowed to start until 7pm.
I don’t even live in Adelaide but think Fridays episode should be on at 6:50pm cause
I don’t like the idea of Thursday with a double episode 7:00-8:00 then BHAG at 8:00-9:00
I know it’s only one market and a small one at that but H&A is a 5 night a week program and if you start to mess around with timeslots people hate it and switch off

  8. Let’s hope the NRL learns from the AFL about how to put a television coverage package together for the fan.

    Great work from the AFL.

Its a shame the clowns at the NBL have let their TV coverage turn into such a farce. I really enjoyed the 2 live games last year but the 3 hour delayed games this year is absolutely disgraceful.
