SBS now Seven Billion Stories, but who’s counting?

With the world's population reaching 7 billion, SBS is upgrading to a new tagline: "Seven Billion Stories and Counting."

Three years ago it was Six Billion Stories and counting, but with the world’s population reaching 7 billion, SBS is upgrading to Seven Billion Stories and counting -and least it still fits with the “S” of SBS.

The updated tagline, ‘Seven Billion Stories and counting…’ will be accompanied by a new look and sound for television and radio.

The update on SBS television, radio and online will include new packaging for promotions, as well as a campaign titled ‘the Birth of the 7th Billion Story’, created by US Sydney.

“Our brand is in great shape and our audience is telling us our branding is a great way to sell what SBS provides. Since launching ‘Six Billion Stories and counting…’ three years ago, audiences now view SBS as braver, creative, relevant, and intelligent. As a true multiplatform broadcaster we are well positioned for the changes taking place in the media marketplace with a brand that is built to last,” said SBS director of marketing Jacquie Riddell.

“As we mark the change to seven billion people on our planet, we’re updating our famous line and reminding Australians that SBS is still the only broadcaster with both the purpose and capacity to tell the stories of the whole world.”

The Seven Billion Stories campaign will be translated into three languages for SBS TV and 15 languages for SBS Radio.

The update will also include a 30-second TV commercial featuring the initiatives of the ‘7 Billion Actions’ program, an in-language radio campaign, a digital campaign across www.sbs.com.au, social media via Facebook, Twitter and SBS blogs, and e-newsletters sent directly to SBS subscribers.

SBS also partners with the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) ‘7 Billion Actions’ program to highlight poverty and inequality; women and girls; young people; reproductive health and rights; environment; ageing; and urbanisation.

  1. In all this time I didn’t know that ‘Six Billion Stories’ were supposed to be the initials for ‘SBS’ and that the 6 billion referred to the amount of people in the world but rather thought that’s how many stories they had shown in their time as a channel. It’s really the first time I have heard of this, they should have really made their branding much clearer.

  2. This explains why they’ve been re-airing those pre-SBS One & Two ‘this is my story’ (live action) station IDs of late – their last hurrah? That changeable slogan has worked very well for SBS, but isn’t it frightening that they’ve had to update from Six to Seven Billion Stories in only three years? Stop having kids, people!

PS: Stephen, Seven billion stories, 158 viewers… With a functioning brain.

  3. The rebranding has to be done, I guess, but it’s not going to be cheap. The stationery bill alone would probably pay for another Series of East West 101. Well, an episode of Housos anyway….
