I would love to make a top25 list of films – but its my opinion only. My gripe was that this list is virtually the same everytime World Movies do things like this – and its annoying to see “Amelie” on top every time just because its a recognisable film – it has nothing to do actually being a great film.
But, this lists are desgined for discussion, and thats exactly what its done. I’m just disappointed than Pan’s Labyrinth is not included considering the amount of hype it received years ago, and the list is devoid of anything from the last few years – also I find it amazing there is only 3 Asian films (2 Japanese, 1 HK) yet an over-representation of French films. Where are the rest of the world’s cinema? No Indian films, nothing from New Zealand or Canada, Korean horror is absent and nothing from the Middle East? Please…
And Breathless?? Please – if you want to be bored out of your brain, go ahead… I’d rather take something more progressive like Battle Royale or heck, what about In The Realm Of Senses (from the 70s)? World Movies showed a fantastic Chinese movie called “Earthquake” a few weeks ago, and it was from 2010 – that is a movie people should see that deals with issues like family ties and a mother who has to make the most horrible decision ever – and the child who resents her for it.
In the end, its just a popular list of “foreign” (re: European cinema with a few token Asian films) movies that the latte hipsters discuss when they want to look intelligent in front of the un-washed. Move along….
ask them how many people actually voted.
The list is not very inspirational, a bit on the safe site, don’t you think. What about ‘Tsotsi’ = one of my favorites. ‘Waltz with Bashir’? – ‘Amores Perros’? Or do we only appreciate ‘feel good movies’? Oh, and by the way I also love ‘Run Lola Run’!
those 25 films are continually repeated on world movies, this 25 films you must see is nothing more than a huge promo for the channel, if they were serious, they should of expanded the list of options, these 25, as good and brillant as they are, a fairly dull list I have to say.
@James, each to their own, Amelie is a masterpiece and not overrated.
I’m sorry but I just lost total respect for this list as soon as I saw Run Lola Run…
Well, wht about you pick yours DansDans?
Amelie is good- but it is a fairly generic list of foreign movies that it is ok to like
I love Amelie…one of my favourites….each to their own ..I guess…
Is it just me or was Amelie very very overrated. It was a nice little film but not quite the masterpiece people go on about.
You read my mind DansDans. Burnt By The Sun, Indochine, Kolya, The Kite Runner…so many.
Some good movies on that list but, like DansDans, surprised that El Laberinto del Fauno is not on it. I also would prob have included Hero and La Cité des Enfants Perdus but concede that they have less mass appeal.
Looks like the list hasn’t changed much – they could just wheel out the promo I made for them 8 years ago!
Also, Pan’s Labyrinth is not on this list…
Seriously… are there no other foreign movies shown in this country other than this same recycled list?
