CBS to remake The Rifleman

The next TV remake under consideration in the US is 1958 classic western series, The Rifleman.

CBS is looking to reboot the series with director Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone).

The new version will centre on Civil War hero Lucas McCain, an unparalleled sharpshooter with a haunted past, who moves to the uncharted New Mexico territory to raise his son Mark. There, he joins forces with the Sheriff to protect his new town and become its unofficial guardian.

It follows renewed interest in westerns including Hell on Wheels, Gateway, Gunslinger and Hangtown from Battlestar Galactica mastermind Ronald D. Moore. No doubt they can all thank Deadwood.

CBS is also developing Ralph Lamb, based on the 1960s adventures of a real-life cowboy-turned-Las Vegas sheriff, while NBC has ordered a script for Shaun Cassidy’s 1840s-set The Frontier.

  1. In most cases like this the original is always far more better than the remake and considering that a lot of production companies are looking at ways of doing television for as cheap as possible, why not just show the original series?

I wonder if they will get Johnny Crawford (Mark in the original series) to make an appearance.

  2. Some shows are of there time and should be left there.

Obviously the network “executives” are so devoid of any originally that all they can do is attempt remakes of shows they watched when growing up. Or jump on the bandwagon with shows so much like each other you wonder you you bother to watch them.

  3. Not a western fan but this might be interesting. As opposed to previous remakes I’ve never seen this show so I don’t have a sentimental attachment to it. They should also get johnny crawford to do a cameo or perhaps a recurring character.

  4. God no wonder tv networks are struggling for new drama because all they keep doing is remake after remake after remake. Before we know it the whole schedule will be remakes

  5. Deadwood was fantastic but the often jarring coarse language and violence was an integral part of the show which cannot be duplicated into most prime time drama. Whilst I look forward to a show that draws me into the frontier country, it is going to be a struggle to create one that is not a clone or a poor imitation of Deadwood.

  6. Wow, great idea. It’ll be up there with Knight Rider and Charlie’s Angels. Have TV Execs really ran out of ideas? With the audience craving more originality (Dexter, Game of Thrones, Sons of Anarchy, Boardwalk Empire) they come up with banality. Expect Nine to pick it up straight away.
