Seven under fire from family of Kerry Whelan

The family of murder victim Kerry Whelan slams Seven's The One for turning her death "into a game show."

Seven’s psychic game show The One has come under after the finale tested contestants on their ability to help solve the murder of Kerry Whelan.

Bernie Whelan has told the Daily Telegraph nobody from Seven contacted them prior to the episode airing.

Kerry Whelan disappeared in 1997 and was murdered by convicted killer Bruce Burrell but her body has never been found. The One asked its finalists to try and find her remains.

“In the season finale, the three finalists are given a seemingly impossible challenge when they’re asked to solve a real-life police case,” Seven said in promoting the finale.

“The first we knew of this was on the weekend when we were watching TV and saw Kerrie’s face pop up,” Bernie Whelan said.

“No one ever contacted us and we’ve always been co-operative with the media.

“They’ve turned Kerrie’s murder into a game show.”

In the show, three finalists wandered through bushland in the hope of discovering her body.

“It was real exciting to find that mine shaft, but it wasn’t where I felt Kerry was connect to,” said one of the show’s psychics, Greg Riley (pictured).

“And then I found this other mine and I felt an instant connection to this mine.

“She’s standing next to me. It’s like that magnet against that pull. I feel her here, I really do.

“If one of us managed to find where Kerry was. I think it would be something that would give the family closure.”

Two judges then discussed the possibility of finding her body.

“Obviously we undertook the challenge in the hope of solving a 15 year mystery,” host Andrew Daddo told viewers.

Despite not discovering any remains, Daddo said all the information would be given to relevant authorities.

A Seven spokesperson did not confirm any consent from the Whelan family, when asked by TV Tonight.

“With programs featuring this type of subject matter, we deal through the regular police channels,” they said.

  1. @ Secret Squirrel and Mr Science and Reason, You believe what you want to believe, and i’ll believe what I want to believe. I don’t need to prove my opinion to anyone. You are both sceptics, and nothing I or anyone else says about the matter will change your mind, so I simply won’t bother. Secret Squirrel, your comments towards me are becoming quite personal, I wish there was a way of blocking you on here 🙂

  2. Way to go Seven. This just caps a stellar week of deafening silence from you regarding violence toward women.

@Moanique – you do believe some rubbish. How about some evidence to back up your spurious claim? This has been researched and investigated time and time again. No supposed psychic has ever solved any police case.

On the rare occasion where some information has proven relevant it has always been because the “psychic” had prior knowledge or because it was a highly publicised case where the police receive thousands of “tips”, most of which are completely useless and just waste resources. In these cases, one of the “tips” may appear to have some relevance but it is due to simple, measurable probability. This “psychic” will then use this single coincidence to promote themselves for years afterwards but is strangely never able to repeat their magic. People also seem to conveniently forget the literally hundreds of supposed psychics who were wrong with their guesses.

The most disgusting thing about this is that most of these people are nothing but charlatans who prey on people when they’re most vulnerable.

  3. @ Moanique – you say and I quote “There have been many crimes solved by psychics, and not just in the US,” Could you please provide at least one case report where a psychic detective has solved an actual crime where someone was convicted as the FBI have even come out to put to rest that there has not been one documented case where a charlatan….pardon me a psychic has ever solved a case or actually have been of any help to the authorities.

As for channel 7…..you bloody pigs anything for a rating you disgusting excuses for human beings.

  4. I don’t want to open a can of worms, but there have been no crimes ever solved by psychics. There have been many criminal investigations interfered with and taken credit for by psychics, but they never solved a single case anywhere in the entire world.

This is because there is no such thing as psychic ability. It’s either a scam or a false belief.

  5. I was wondering what the family thought of the whole thing. However I disagree with commenters saying that psychics have no place in solving crimes. There have been many crimes solved by psychics, and not just in the US, but some people just can’t help but be sceptical.

  6. I saw the promo for this and couldn’t believe they were using a relatively recent murder case as part of a trashy reality show. You only need to stop for one minute and think how the family and friends of Kerry Whelan might feel about their tragedy being used in that way. Really, really appalling.

  7. I happened to catch it while changing channels and I was stunned at the tackiness of it all. And the banal comments from the Daddo made it even worse. The cynic guy was squirming in his seat in embarrassment. I hope the family sue.

  8. I had to watch this crap with a friend and it was woeful. If people think a bunch of hokey mediums are going to solve a case where the authorities had already done painstaking searches with modern equipment and found no sign of this poor woman how are they going to help except by upsetting the family which has happened.Shame on you Channel 7 and for all those who participated ib this farce.

  9. television stoops to a new low….. when these people parade around saying they have special powers….. 7 will say they handled it with care and sensitivites….but sadly i think not

  10. It would have been better form to have contacted the family but I guess as long as the show was co operating with the authorities responsible for the investigation and were given the green light, then that should be enough..
