Seven’s Kitchen rules Monday

The battle for Reality TV fans has begun, with Seven taking an early lead -and ABC News benefitting from the tussle.

We are still two weeks out from the start of official ratings but a quick look at last night’s schedule shows the battle is on in the early evening timeslots.

Seven’s third season of My Kitchen Rules was the top show for Monday with 1.48m viewers, giving Please Marry My Boy (1.25m) a healthy lead in. Home and Away (1.03m) also won its slot. How I Met your Mother pulled 762,000 / 683,000 for its two episodes, and the first outing for Sports Fever was 236,000 at the last starting time of 10:45pm. Deal or No Deal had a dead heat with Hot Seat on 530,000. Sunrise (406,000) beat the new look Today (346,000) but Nine led in Sydney and Melbourne.

Nine managed a robust second place for the night with a new The Big Bang Theory its best performer on 1.35m viewers, then 892,000 for a repeat. More importantly for Nine was the premiere of Excess Baggage, which averaged 880,000 across its 75 minute outing. Airing a week apart, and without Australian Open, Excess Baggage premiered just below the season launch of The Biggest Loser (897,000). The Mentalist was 657,000 / 473,000.

TEN was unable to lift beyond its TEN News (737,000) with The Biggest Loser (698,000) pushed to fourth place. Elsewhere a new episode of NCIS: LA was 583,000 and Hawaii Five-0 was 559,000. The Project (474,000) dropped from its News lead-in.

With the reality-fest in the early evening ABC News lifted to 1.02m viewers (watch this trend continue?). 7:30 was 731,000, Australian Story 608,000 and Miracles 403,000.

Mythbusters was 236,000 on SBS ONE.

Seven won the night.

  1. I would think that replacing Mentalist repeats and TBBT repeats after a new ep did nothing for ratings. They would have been better playing new eps of Harry’s law @ 9:30! Also OI was pretty sure 9 advertised a new ep of the Mentalist for this week unless their advertising conmfused me (deliberately) Pick up your game 9!!

  2. @ Jake…you are right!…and I am one of them…who would pay for TV with ads in it….go figure…
And I watched Excess Baggage….did turn over at 7.30PM to Seven to check out MKR…but they were running late….so went back to Nine…then watched MKR after….I saw all 3 courses cooked, served and judged…..so really did not miss anything…
Keeping an open mind on the program after….Marry my Son….?!?

  3. Most people would have watched Excess Baggage because it’s a new show and just to try it out. They aren’t even great numbers for them. Judging from people who watched the show and comments on here it won’t last. I think it will be put on Gem or Go! or a different timeslot.

  4. Reality: cooking shows, fatties, sport, you can keep them all.
We watched ABC news and a bit of their 7:30 current affairs (until the dreaded sport story) and then went to our normal night of pre-recorded drama from either Fox or ABC2.

  5. 1.2m for Please Marry my Boy. What were Australia thinking? I didn’t see it (guess I shouldn’t complain then, but it looked like complete rubbish from the promos)

  6. A good result for ABC News – its figures have been slowly climbing for a while now. I think part of the reason for the higher numbers is that people are getting sick and tired of the tabloid news on the commercial networks and they want something that is more informative and factual.

  7. Those Excess Baggage numbers are hardly spectacular nor are those for The Biggest Loser. I think the two shows will cannabilise each other (there cannot be that many people all wanting to watch weight loss programs at the same time) unless or until one is cancelled. Depending on how long the planned season is I suspect Nine will dump it if the show falls regularly below 500,000.

Sadly, if that happens we will get to watch more repeats of The Big Bang Theory.

  8. MKR was fab last night, loved the Greek brother and sister. I think the show is going to go gangbusters yet again for Seven and it is going to rain all over Excess Baggage’s parade. Damn, but Seven cast their reality series well!

  9. Great start to MKR. It was good to have it back. Please Marry My Boy will drop big time next week. Last night was bad, real bad and if they hold up next week i will be very surprised. So happy Excess Baggage is where it is. That show is just a blatent rip off of the Biggest loser and i won’t be ever watching that show again. Its just another so called “celebrity” weight loss show. Not a bad start to Sports Fever considering it finished at 11:45pm.

TEN had an awful night. I knew they would. NCIS: LA will be back to 9:30pm Tuesdays very quickly.

  10. Nine would be disappointed with 880,000 for Excess Baggage. I’m pretty sure you’ll see these figures go down and MKR’s go up over the next few weeks.

I really enjoyed Sports Fever. Takes me back to the days of Graham and The Colonel on The Late Show (Santo Cilauro and Rob Sitch for those under 30). Easy to watch and good for a laugh. It’s never going to pull huge numbers at 10.30pm but hopefully enough will watch for it to stick around for a while.

  11. Enjoyed Sports Fever. Pity it’ll clash with Footy Classified when that returns. And also a pity Seven can’t start on time, and i’m forced to endure the horrible Please Marry My Boy. Seven if you don’t start shows on time, i’ll switch off altogether.

  12. Obviously 1.25m people who don’t have Foxtel, because MTV have had like 5 different “mother/father choosing a guy/girl for their daughter/son” shows in the last several years.

  13. Great numbers for TBBT, the show Nine once wrote off. But what I hate is their promos. They are taking clips from previous season and twisting the truth. One clip was of Penny kissing Leonard back at the start of season 3 over 2 years ago and nothing to do with this weeks episode. I’m dreading what they will come up with for the 100th ep in a few weeks.

BTW on CBS in the US the show is getting it’s best ratings ever now and the last two weeks beat American Idol in total viewers. Not bad for an outdated format, a sitcom using 3 cameras and a studio audiance.

  14. Oh ok. So they must be good figures for that time. It looked low budget too so that will help save 7 money. Wit is more important than flashy production imho. Im suprised all of oz didnt watch mkr with the amount of ads.

  15. How did the numbers for MKR compare to last year’s launch?

I notice that next week their Monday shows are 7:30, 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30 so hopefully that improves the numbers for Sports Fever a bit.

Really liked Please Marry My Boy, a couple of the mothers are nightmares (mainly that racist Serbian mother who only wants her son to marry another Serbian)

Channel Ten’s Super Sunday, Channel Seven’s Mega Monday. Loving it!
