Tomic takes on TEN’s Super Sunday

It's game on as Bernard Tomic and Roger Federer face off against TEN's Super Sunday of premieres.

TEN’s brash move to launch four of its key entertainment offerings for 2012 this Sunday just got bad news.

Bernard Tomic will take on Roger Federer in the fourth round of the Australian Open on Sunday.

The game is set to begin at 7pm AEDT and Seven has strategically scheduled its broadcast from 6:30pm -the same time that Young Talent Time premieres in the key markets of Sydney and Melbourne.

As well as high hopes for YTT, TEN needs Homeland viewers to tap into the layered storylines from the first episode.

While some observers have questioned TEN’s move in kicking off key shows three weeks before offical ratings resume, Monday morning’s ratings will give us the answer.

But any pain may not end there.

The Biggest Loser season premiere could face a Lleyton Hewitt match on Monday night.

Meanwhile, TEN may have a fan in Barack Obama if the Hollywood Reporter is an indicator.

It seems the US President is already a fan of Homeland and Modern Family and now he has written to New Girl‘s Zooey Deschanel on her 32nd birthday:

“As you celebrate this special occasion with your family and friends, please know I am grateful for all you have done to encourage and support young women who are making a difference across our country. I hope your day is filled with love and laughter, and I wish you all the best for good health and happiness in the year ahead.”

Don’t suppose he has an OzTAM people meter this weekend?

  1. Ten will hurt Seven’s tennis numbers. Seven would be hating this competition, they usually get a “free-kick” at this time of year. Good on Ten for giving us something else to watch. How boring is the tennis. So so boring.

  2. I still stand by my comments from earlier when announced. The people at TEN have no idea what they are doing. They are strapped for content as it is and yet start 3 weeks before official ratings. I seriously hope everything tanks to give TEN a massive wake up call. To those saying its good to have it this week obviously don’t know much about TV because IMO this is the worst decision TEN have made in a long time

  3. It won’t look good for Warburton if super Sunday turns out to be a flop. Judging by the ads YTT seems to have a bit too much ‘attitude’ for my liking. Also don’t like how they are using a failing show like The Project to prop up their lineup but it’s the best they have I guess.

  4. Thank goodness for Ten who is putting on some decent programs so people like me who do not want to watch sport or repeats can have something to watch. If they waited until Feb, what would they replace Merlin, Terra Nova and Its a Knockout with? Some people should realize not everyone wants to watch tennis and while Ten are taking a risk, these shows should at least do better than the other shows in these timeslots. Looking at the ratings over the week, the shows not on 7 seem to be doing about the same so whos to say these new shows will bomb just because of sport. I do recall Ten starting new shows in the past against both tennis and cricket and did well. Even Masterchef has done well against State of Origin. 7 & 9 even put up big shows against the Commonwealth Games. While a risky move, it was a great move which I hope does well.

  5. you wouldn’t know any other player is in the aus open. all we have seen at night is australians every night. 7 has to much say in who plays at night

  6. And Nine has propped up its Sunday night with a repeat Big Bang Theory at 6.30pm. It will probably be its highest rated show for the night, then a huge decline from the show following.

  7. JamesJ. And the ratings in Perth will surely be the difference between a show being cancelled and renewed – not. Sadly Perth and Adelaide are irrelevancies except when TT beats ACA in overall figures.
Back on topic. Why does 10’s programming blunders never fail to amaze. Absolute muppets – though Elmo would do a better job.

  8. I think its a good idea to launch ahead of ratings, but I don’t understand why ten insists on launching new shows on sunday, the most competitive night of the week. These shows would have a far better chance of sucess on a weeknight. Eg. Terra nova, Hawaii five o and the good wife dropped significantly after a few weeks in that slot and I predict the same will happen with homeland. And I’m surprised the biggest loser isn’t in that lineup, given that it usually performs in its Sunday slot.

  9. I’m going to predict the figures just for kicks

YTT: 1.5 million premiere, followed by a sharp drop, stabilising at 700k in a month’s time
    Modern Family: 900k
    New Girl: 800k
    Homeland: 700k

Those are premiere figures I’m taking a stab at there…

  10. Can feel encore presentations coming on of all tens sundays shows happening mid week. The bad news for ten is the following week is the tennis final so lost viewers there too. So critical for a show like homeland that viewers see the first two episodes

  11. Uh oh this isn’t going to end well for TEN. I actually like their lineup but I can see the majority of viewers will be watching the tennis. I wonder the DVR usage will jump up this Sunday.

  12. Ten will get clobbered :/ guess we can expect repeat airings of Super Sunday peppered throughout the week

TBL could come out long term ok but just absolute madness to take on the tennis and expect to win

  13. At least it will probably be over by the time YTT starts in Perth, where TEN usually does pretty good numbers.

I don’t doubt there will be encore screenings being advertised Monday morning.

  14. I’ll be watching channel TEN and flicking over at the ads. Unfortunately for Tomic, I think it may be a quick game anyway and may be over just in time for Homeland anyway.
