James Spader is set to exit US sitcom The Office.
Spader, who first appeared in a guest role as Robert California in mid 2011, has opted not to be part of the series’ ninth season. He replaced Kathy Bates’ character as the company’s new chief executive, after the exit of Steve Carell (Michael Scott).
Executive producer Paul Lieberstein tells the Hollywood Reporter, “James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television.”
“He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.”
Amid speculation about other on and off-camera faces toying with departure, NBC is also said to be eyeing a spin-off for Rainn Wilson’s ‘Dwight Schrute’ character.

@Sharpy – Jon Lovitz would be hilarious!
Full episode of Dwight… might be a bit too much for me to handle – will be looking to put all that in jelly I think!
And the revolving door of Dunder Mifflin / Sabre continues to turn. I’ve quite enjoyed Mr Spader’s input.. his dry ascerbic wit has been a nice counterpoint to the usual shenanegans. I nominate Jon Lovitz as Sabres new CFO.
He is not in the episodes often anyway…. easy gig I spose.

James Spader currently airing in The Office episodes showing on Eleven Tuesdays at 9.00pm.
It looks like he is not trying – he is that natural in the show
Good riddance, he was not a good fit for this show.
I think he should move over to Revenge, he would be great as Nolan’s dad.
Has Spader’s episodes been screened in Australia? Or is it not too late to catch this brilliant actor’s contribution to this show?
