White Collar’s Matt Bomer comes out

Matt Bomer has come out as gay in a thankyou speech at an awards ceremony.

Matt Bomer, star of US cable drama White Collar, has come out as gay in a thankyou speech at an awards ceremony.

Bomer, 34, thanked his partner and his three children while accepting an honour at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. He received a New Generation Arts and Activism Award for his efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“I’d really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry,” he said onstage. “Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment.”

Bomer’s partner, Hall, is a publicist with Slate PR, representing Ryan Murphy, Neil Patrick Harris and such production companies as Working Title.

In a January 2010 he was questioned about gay rumours but said, “I don’t care about that at all. I’m completely happy and fulfilled in my personal life.

“I have a network and a show riding on my shoulders. I would say a big difference between my character and me is that I can be too trusting. And I’ve realised in this business that’s not necessarily the smartest thing to be. I definitely have a thing or two to learn from the con artists.”

In April he will guest star in Glee -playing Blaine’s (Darren Criss) older brother, no less.

  1. It’s been fairly well known for a while. The real issue, is why are Ten screwing over the White Collar show, as they still haven’t finished showing season 2 and started showing season 3 that’s almost finished in the US, so I had to use other means to see it.

Ten could always move WC to Eleven, at an 8.30 or 9.30 pm timeslot.

  2. If/when a famous person comes out it might help a young confused teenager struggling with their sexuality realise that they are not alone.

It can be a hard road for some people. LGBT suicide rates are through the roof.

There is still far too much importance placed on the “Is he gay or straight?” questions by the media.

    It doesn’t really matter.

  3. Yeah as i said in the Magda Szubanski article, everyone knew he was gay, but he’s never “come out”, which is great, he shouldn’t have to announce it. But publicly thanking his partner Simon, was the first time he’s acknoweledged that. The fact everyone already knew shows that it shouldn’t be a big deal.

  4. What interests me is when Season 2 will be available on DVD since Ch10 failed to show the second half in 2011 in QLD!
Anyway sexuality isn’t an issue the quality of the actors, script and show are!

  5. Nicely done. Simon Halls is a lucky man.

As for whether he was already “out” or not – I *think* this is the first time he has publicly acknowledged his partner by his name.

They’ve attend numerous award ceremonies, fund raising events, etc together and Bomer has always been open about having a “family and kids”, but he’s never provided a crystal clear confirmation that his co-parent is a male.

  6. This seems to be happening more as actors get their success in a role, they feel as though they can release that part of their life to the public.
I noticed many of the White Collar cast doing other projects in recent months, with Marsha Thomason in an episode of Two Broke Girls, and Tim DeKay in Chuck and Hot in Cleveland.

  7. I couldve sworn he came out years ago?? I’ve known he was gay for years.

Since at least 2010. There was an interview with him on TVLine or something similar
