Community creator Dan Harmon (pictured, right) has been fired as showrunner by Sony Pictures Television.
He will be replaced by writers David Guarascio and Moses Port (Just Shoot Me) for Season 4.
“Why’d Sony want me gone? I can’t answer that because I’ve been in as much contact with them as you have. They literally haven’t called me since the season four pickup, so their reasons for replacing me are clearly none of my business. Community is their property, I only own ten percent of it, and I kind of don’t want to hear what their complaints are because I’m sure it would hurt my feelings even more now that I’d be listening for free.”
Earlier NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said of Harmon, “I expect his voice to be part of it.”
But Harmon said in direct response, “That’s a misquote. I think he meant to say he’s sure cookies are yummy, because he’s never called me once in the entire duration of his employment at NBC. He didn’t call me to say he was starting to work there, he didn’t call me to say I was no longer working there and he definitely didn’t call to ask if I was going to be involved. I’m not saying it’s wrong for him to have bigger fish to fry, I’m just saying, NBC is not a credible source of All News Dan Harmon.”
Ouch.
Meanwhile some of the cast have reacted to the news on Twitter.
“@danharmon you are a true genius,” tweeted star Joel McHale, which ends with a reference to Harmon’s extensive statement on his firing. “You gave me the role of a lifetime & three of the best years of my life. Buying #Prototype2 today.”
Agreeing with McHale, the actress behind Britta, Gillian Jacobs, writes, “I wholeheartedly agree with @joelmchale. I’m so grateful to @danharmon for my role, the show and everything else. Thank you, Dan. Thank you.”
Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley, also expressed her thoughts to her Twitter followers, writing, “.@danharmon So many thoughts. So little room. I guess, ‘I heart you’ and ‘Thank you to INFINITY’ will have to do for now. #Community #Love
Harmon had been involved in public spats with star Chevy Chase, but since apologised for their feud becoming public knowledge.

Chevy has long been known to be a big pain in the ass (ever since his SNL days), but Harmon acted like an even bigger ass and got canned. Still, I’m sure the Executive Consultant credit will pay well.
Opps! Go! not 10. Sorry! LOL.
Worst decision by NBC.
@Rocknerd Happy Endings actually currently doubles ratings of 30 Rock both here currently on 7 and in the U.S as well…
Worst decision ever!
Just watch this quality sit-com become another generic blah.
The people taking over are involved with Happy endings. You know that invisible sit-com on 7 which can’t even pull ratings when jammed between eps of 30Rock.

The mid season hiatus was great for the show, the second half of season 3 were some of the funniest yet. Computer game episode and the finale were brilliant. Hope it doesn’t change. #sixseasonsandamovie
@SKOB Community is on GO! not channel ten. (channel ten is the best tho)
It is a sad loss. ‘Dan Harmon’ was trending on twitter for 2 or so days when it was announced he was being replaced. Im just hoping the show will sustain the awesomeness it had when he was show runner. #sixseasonsandamovie
SKOB,Community isn’t on ch 10.
The final episodes of season 3 are rippers, especially the computer episode.
@SKOB – isn’t Community on GO! ?
I love this show, one of my top 10, hope it doesn’t change too much in what is likely it’s last season.
I’m more than willing to give S4 a chance… but geez they are losing off-screen personnel at a rate of knots.
What a disappointing situation surrounding one of my favourite shows. I was so happy to hear it would get a 4th season, but now I’m more worried about it than excited.
Community is such a quirky, witty and very cleverly written show. And I understand that Dan’s voice is a big part of the show. If the show loses any of its crazy wit or out-there episodes it’s never going to be the same.
One of the most recent episodes that just aired before its season 3 finale was just terrific, a video-game themed episode packed with great humour. No other show seems to be willing to do things like that, and if they just start “playing it safe” without Dan I fear it’s really lost its heart.
I loved this show, but I don’t watch it, I buy the DVDs when they are out. I avoid Ch 10 like the plague.
I wonder if the change will show any reall differnce in the writing? Wil the ratings drop? I”m sure Dan will love to be able to say “Ha ha. Told you so.”
