Women’s 20km race walk: Regan Lamble, Beki Lee, Claire Tallent (final)
Australia will provide a full quota today for both the men’s 50km and women’s 20km walks, with our men the best prospects for a medal. Luke Adams, Nathan Deakes and Jared Tallent will undertake the 25 laps of the course at The Mall. Deakes is a former world title (2007) and world record holder, while Tallent claimed the 50km silver medal in Beijing, a week after getting the bronze in the 20km to become the first Australian athlete to claim two medals at the same Olympics since Raelene Boyle in 1972. He then picked up the bronze medal at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu. While Adams doesn’t have a world or Olympic medal to show, he is no slouch either, with Russia’s Sergei Bakhulin and China’s Si Tianfeng amongt the leading international prospects. Regan Lamble, Beki Lee and Claire Tallent will have ten laps of the course to contend with and Jared’s wife Claire may be the pick of our women’s contingent, but they will find it tough against the Russian trio of Olga Kaniskina, Elena Lashminova and Anisya Kirdyapkina and China’s Lui Hong.

There’s a chance for Kenenisa Bekele (Kenya) to cement his place in distance running firmament in the men’s 5000m final, while two-time Olympic champion Andreas Thorkildsen (Norway), Vitezslav Vesely (Czech Rep), Vadims Vcasileuskis (Latvia) will make life tough for Jarrod Bannister in the javelin, although the Australian is not without some hope for a bold showing.
