French police raid HQ of Paris 2024 Games

Raids in Paris took place just over a year out from the opening ceremony of 2024 event.

The headquarters of Paris Olympics was raided by French investigators on Tuesday in a probe into suspected corruption.

The Paris organising committee said in a statement that a search was under way at their headquarters in the suburb of Saint-Denis, and that “Paris 2024 is cooperating with the investigators to facilitate their investigations”, but would not comment further.

An official with the financial prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday the searches were linked to two preliminary investigations related to the Paris Olympics that had not previously been made public.

The BBC suggested the police were looking into allegations of favouritism and misuse of public money in the attribution of construction contracts.

Vote-buying allegations linked to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and the Tokyo Games in 2021 previously removed several members of the International Olympic Committee from that organisation.

According to Le Monde newspaper, raids also took place at the offices of the public body in charge of Olympic infrastructure, and at the headquarters of several companies and consultants linked to the organisation of the games.

Paris organisers declined to comment.

The Paris Olympics are scheduled for July 26-August 11, 2024.
